I am a legal assistant (working on paralegal program), new to the field after a career change. I was let go from my last position for performance issues, although I was the 6th hire for the position in 18 months.
My main question is, how would I explain the situation to potential employers/recruiters so that I don't come across as a poor employee? I don't want to lay the blame on that firm; I gained a lot of skills there, even if it didn't work out

So they have hired and fired 6 people for that position in 18 months? Or it was a team of 6+ individuals and you were the 6th hire.

I think it an interviewer asks you can explain that your current/former employee has gone through 6 people in 18 months. That’s a sign of their environment and not you.

Starting with the truth is a good start but you also don’t have to be defensive if that also means allocating some of the fault or blame to the employer, especially if you can end up on a positive (e.g. never happened to me before (say in 33 years) and I have references to prove it if you wish). The key is to persuade the prospect this was your former employers loss and if they hire you, I promise you will not regret putting your faith in me and it will be your gain. If you’re honest and sincere, it will come across as authentic and sincere. P.S. - And it won’t hurt to practice it out loud and in front of a mirror so you’re not just comfortable but confident when you have to actually bite the bullet.

You can say it was not a good fit, considering there was a high turnover rate at that particular firm.

I think I am on some kinda roll here, applied to a lot of jobs (when I say a lot, it’s probably over 200, no kidding) over the last year and nothing positive yet. Almost all rejects are due to “No sponsorship available” but none of them tell you that in the rejection email or in the job description.

I did get a couple contract jobs through my employer (staffing agency) but ended up rejecting them.

I’m pissed but I’ll still keep applying!

I will likely be promoted to a Level 1 underwriter within the next 6 months to a year at the latest. Thanks!

As I’ve grown more confident as a litigator, my imposter syndrome has given way to a crushing self-imposed standard of high performance. When I see another lawyer make an argument I didn’t think of or deconstruct a position I’ve taken in a way I didn’t foresee, I get so down on myself. Same when I’m on a call and a partner answers a client’s question on the spot and I realize I couldn’t have done the same. Anyone else?

I wish people understood that not every aspect of a relationship needs to be a democracy. Sometimes, the relationship is a Caribbean Island and you are its dictator. You don't have to compromise on every single issue and not every compromise is going to be 50/50. Ideally, you perfectly align half of the time, 40% of the time you compromise, and 10% of the time it's a unilateral decision.

For instance, because of my career, where we live is a unilateral decision on my end for whoever I date.
