I am a licensed attorney in State A, I just passed the CA bar and will be swearing in soon. My law firm will only pay for one active membership. Is there any reason why I should pay the yearly fees in State A to keep myself active if I’m not actually practicing state law? Do I still need to do State A CLE if I choose not to pay?

With the UBE this may have changed, but I was always advised to keep my earliest admission state active so it could be used as my “active practice” time period in the event I needed to waive in to another state that allowed it. As for whether you need to do mandatory CLE while inactive, that varies by state. Inactive means different things in different states and for some it can be an administrative pain to go back to active status should you want to practice there.

That’s very short-sighted of your firm. I would probably keep state A active. Depending on the state, it may not offer any reciprocity with California, in case you ever wanted back in, or State A may help get you reciprocity into State B.

Where are you physically located?

Does State A have good options to go inactive and active later?

I’m physically located in California. State A does allow me to go active later if I choose

Feeling bad for leaving right before busy season. I'm on a 9/30 client and I'm planning on leaving next month (I've been applying). Feel like I need to apologize to the team. Is that normal? I feel like I'm definitely burning bridges.
