Yea she is being a dick
We’re in the business of managing relationships and it blows my mind there are people in management positions who don’t know how to build said relationships with people they work with. Feel better soon!
Ohhhh they exist, plenty of them....
You need a new boss. Get out of there!!!
Are you with McKinsey? Because I recently saw a post where the partner was boasting about how she never works after 9 PM and before 5 AM!
hahahaha I saw that too and thought they posted it by mistake! someone clearly fked up hahahah
You should prioritize your health, and the firm should support that
Tell your boss tough luck you cant travel nor change follow up, sucks to be them
That’s terrible, but also, life
Of course not, stick up for yourself. Sometimes you can’t ask and need to tell. Be less responsive put up an away message and if need be, go one level above the manger to let SM+ know what’s going on and hope they’re more human. Just saying I’ve seen this type of behavior happen more than once in my career.
When I gave a heads up that I have a follow up to my surgery in two weeks and can’t travel that week, I was asked to move my follow up. 🤷♂️🤷♂️
That tells you everything you need to know about who you are working for..be bold and give some upward feedback
Time for a new job my friend. Hope you get better soon!
Possibly consider going to HR. If they can make reasonable accommodations for you to recover and do some work from home or remote I would try to negotiate that.
Chiming in here this is unacceptable. Maybe I’d let not asking “how are you” slide, but asking to move a surgical follow up is crossing a line.
That’s so mean. I’m sorry. I’ve never had to deal with people like that but I also always prioritize my doctors appointments and won’t move them for travel or meetings. No one has ever pushed back because thankfully they’ve all been very reasonable but I wouldn’t take it if they did.
I also would make sure to document this with hr. When I first started working I had an injury and had to go to a lot of physical therapy. I wasn’t sure how things worked and I wanted to make sure I wasn’t penalized for all the “sick time” I used for it. I spoke to my hr manager so she was aware of the situation and she was very nice about it and I felt better that she was aware in case I ever needed an accommodation
Accenture has a short disability leave that you take for the time of your recovery from a surgery. You can take up to3 months time and for that period of time you get your own case worker who checks on you to see whether you need more time and whether you’re ready to assume your responsibilities. He can also extend your leave by additional time.
OP - please check with your HR if your company offers similar option. Your health is very important and you shouldn’t be asked to accommodate project needs over your own
The best part about consulting is you can change bosses fast
1- have a conversation with the person before your next gig and tell them why “lack of empathy”, “being a dick”, etc
2- let your HR and staffing manager know ASAP
Then see how fast things change with your ex boss
Just remember that some people are all business... I, quite frankly, don't like to discuss personal matters at work and, when possible, avoid getting into others'. It's not that I don't care about the other person, it's just a personality thing. Don't assume ill intentions, tell her how you feel, and be specific about what you want from her.
EY4 is another prime example of people not understanding how to build relationships in the relationships business we’re in 🙄 PS. I also worked with a client in Mexico, there the first thing people ask about is your family and tell you all about theirs. That’s how you do business there, by making a personal connection, instead of jumping straight to your agenda.
Similar thing happened to me instead she sent me an email and then called and asked if I had seen it. Why would I be checking my email when recovering from surgery? It had not even been 24 hours. All I can say is, people are assholes. Once you’re feeling better and back at work, switch project/teams fast!
Sounds pretty typical to me (most managers wouldn’t care)
Unacceptable. Are you comfortable sharing which firm you're with?
Dude/Dudette- what firm are you at? At EY ppl just wouldn’t work for them anymore. Beginning of the end for that
Depends on practice - I have colleagues who’ve recurved poor reviews for being out with serious health issues. I also have friends who have worked while at a sick parents bedside
I had that happen to me, but I have also been in a rush where I forgot to ask, but caught myself later and asked. I would never ask you to move a follow up, and wouldn’t work for someone what doesn’t value me as an individual again.
