I know what you’re talking about, but stay true to yourself. We have enough cookie-cutter managers.
I find it helpful to turn the fun side on and off — make some jokes, then transition by asking a serious question. Change your expression / body language accordingly.
How you dress can also be impactful. Even when a more casual outfit can work, go one notch above.
Attire is something we have total control over and it plays such an important role. Looking the part is step one.
If you aren’t sure about saying something... don’t :)
Listen more. The most senior/smartest people in the rooms tend to speak less than others who are trying to impress
I’m a young manager as well (year 2). And look young. And very friendly with staff and enjoy drinks and casual talk. But doesn’t stop me from being very stern when it comes to work and demand high quality . Most staff tell me they appreciate both sides of it.
Tips on how be serious and make others take you seriously.
Ya I don't think there is anything wrong with jokes but I would say timing is everything, if it is a serious moment than keep it serious.
