McKinsey & Company I’m in between having accepted my offer and starting. I’ve read advice recommending getting your WFH set up ready before starting, and want to take that. I assume the answer is “no”, but could I spend my $150 one-time WFH allowance now and submit expense receipts after starting? Any chance they’d pay back spending prior to start date that was within a certain window (my last company allowed this for moving-related expenses, as an example) of the start? McKinsey & Company

I think it is pretty common and says more about the person with the complaint than anyone else. Some VP’s just want to talk to other VP’s. Think you are right to set expectations with your boss in the next 1:1. Let him/her know that it will help your development as a manager if they could re-direct the complainant to you. Good luck.
They prob didn’t know who the employee was nor who the manager was, and sent it to everyone hoping someone would recognize and handle it…a lot of higher ups don’t do any due diligence when it comes to things that aren’t in their regular scope of work.
I agree with this. Have seen it many times while leading teams and someone higher up spamming their directs not knowing who the complaint might fall under.
As a manager have you ever managed expectations with your team so they understand the chain of command? Even if it is a given they should go to you some people are just clueless of the proper channels to go through or maybe they for some reason felt you wouldn't be objective when it came to that employee for some reason
With my team, yes. This event was a VP (my boss) to VP (his peer) communication that kicked things off. I suppose I will mention it in my next 1-1 with my boss.
Your last point is interesting...I am new the position (4 months in), so it could be my boss is jumping to the second opinion.
Maybe they feared retribution? Or maybe they have tried to bring it up with you and you didn’t take the bait?
But even so I admit that’s a wildly strange thing to do
I wouldn't say it's a red flag but it is indeed strange. I agree with Centene Corporation 1 as well. Most higher ups are not familiar with the teams and their composition.
I've read from your reply that you started just 4 months ago. Maybe that is one of the reasons why he did not communicate things with you directly as he is not acquainted with you yet. But still, as a professional and as a boss, he should know by heart that there is hierarchy in all companies as well as level in terms of receiving and dispensing communications. Respect is indispensable regardless of rank and status. Just saying.
Thanks for thr feedback, all. I will definitely broach the topic in our next 1-1.
