Strict punishments when they step out of line. If they fill out a spreadsheet wrong, no lunch. A typo on a slide? Goodbye weekend. Eventually they will fall in line and learn to respect you as you deserve.
Kill one of them. The rest will learn quickly, Ghengis.
Respect is earned and not a right, especially outside of the military. You need to show that you can add value to the team (deciphering the SM to cut down on rework cycles, guarding people’s night and weekend time, etc.) then they will respect you. Walking in and saying I need to control you and bring you in line will see a knife in your back faster than you can say “I’m your boss"
Act as their coach and advocate. Back them up to the director, and help them. Ask them how you can support them. Get in there and do the dirty work. If they look like they aren’t busy, give them more work or let them leave early. Nothing is better than a good manager. The best leaders lead from behind
Beat them like a rented mule
“The beating will continue until moral improves"
You should construct a shrine for yourself and force them to worship you as a deity.
Also, how did you get promoted to manager?
Your attitude is all wrong - don’t start acting like a d**k just because you got a promo - listen to P2
Find the strongest consultant and subdue them. As the new Alpha, you will now have your respect. You may have to take out the SM as well.
Just Wait till you are a partner/MD. Feels like you have less and less control as you get promoted which is why we train on leading and equipping a team instead of managing. My experience/two cents anyways
Make them all sit with their backs against the wall (posture). Legs at a 90 degree angle (grounded). Instruct them to hold both arms straight out, with laptop balanced on top of both hands (uniformity). Now, begin to inform them why they aren't good enough to be considered human beings, and will all be assigned numbers in place of names. Do not let them eat, sleep, pee or poo without first asking you. Slowly, in time, they will be broken down by your hand, and built back up in your image. Good luck, OP!
You are asking the wrong questions... Ask yourself how you can earn their trust and inspire their best work.
Meet with each of them one on one. Get to know them. Find out how they want to grow and then ideally seek out opportunities to help them. Also be a servant leader. Have the mindset that you work for them. You enable and empower them to be their best. From the tone of your note, you are a ways away from this, but this is what inspires / motivates people, not “getting them in line.” Good luck
Harsh and unrelenting discipline. They will never respect you until they fear you. Can you roll one off at random? My recommendation is to pull them out of a team room on Wednesday morning and send them home. Don’t even tell other people why, just ignore it completely.
It’s heartening to see so many good managers on here. Drink up, young grasshopper!
If you feel that don’t respect you, they probably don’t. Your desire to control them is likely a symptom of the underlying problem. You earn respect. They do what you ask them to do when they understand it’s in their best interest. Take the time to listen, plan as a team and align on common goal and vision. Being a manager doesn’t mean you are better than them. It just means you have a different role. A big part of that role is being a **** shield protecting them so they can get their work done.
Congratulations and condolences on your promotion.
^^^ Wish my present manager knows this
Would I rather be feared or loved? I'd say both. I want people to fear how much they love me.
Show your team how you are helping them in the way that they desire to be helped. You'll build loyalty that way. It's very easy when you're a new manager to lead without ever looking back. Sometimes when you look back, you realize that you have no followers. +2 cents.
With the attitude you have, you are never going to earn their respect.. Be hands on, understand what they say and their perspective, and not yell at them (based on your posted question, I assume you are not polite ).. Learn to be a leader than a manager. Hope you at least know the difference!
