I am a strategy consultant specializing in energy. What are peoples thoughts on someone like me earning a CFA designation? Would this be worth my time? I already have an MBA, was looking at the CFA to learn more about finance and demonstrate a breadth of knowledge in the subject.

As a CFA charterholder, it’s a strong no from me. Even in IB or PE it isn’t really relevant. Only reason to get one is if your employer/future employer requires it, but it add very little value to non-public market investor roles. That time would be far better spent networking and learning things actually relevant. The plot twist is, if you’re going to spend that time watching TV, then it would be slightly more valuable than that alternative.

As a level II candidate myself, I think it’s an excellent path to get started down, and a perfect place to learn about the more investment heavy side of finance. Even in consulting, the charter can be useful to demonstrate functional/practical knowledge of finance/economics, and would definitely help you get a leg up on getting future promotions at management levels

As a level 3 candidate, no. CFA teaches such granularity it is not helpful in consulting. If you goal is to exit to an energy PE or bank, then sure. If you aren't building models day after day, CFA isn't for you. It also doesn't touch on energy finance much, which is a very particular way of approaching valuations and accounting.

Hi all, has anyone in supply chain taken one of the certification exams? (CPSM, CPSD, CSCP) Does it help in any way besides refreshing contents about supply chain? I was thinking might be a good way to strengthen my resume (most of my career in investment analysis) but not really sure if it really brings that much value. Any insights appreciated. #supplychain #cpsm #cpsd #cscp #education #certifications
