I am a tax manager now at a smaller firm with over 5 years of tax only experience and looking to pivot out (even if it means a pay cut). I deeply regret having pigeon holed myself into tax. Ideally, I would like to get into more business valuation based roles as I have an interest. Has anybody done this type of pivot from tax later in their career? Does anybody have any advice on how realistic this is or how best to approach? Or am I basically stuck in tax forever at this point

Never to late to pivot! Also be cautious to sell yourself short—I thought I would have to take a pay cut on my pivot from nonprofit to consulting but ended up making 3x more. Key is marketing your skill set as something relevant and desirable that no one else has

I’m a bval type that pivoted from wealth management via an MBA at 30 years old. Other alternatives would be taking some boot camps or trainings around modeling and corporate finance topics. Get Level 1 of the CFA program under your belt and you will start to tell a good story. Be open to down leveling or you may be setting yourself up for failure. Expectations are different for seniors/managers and you likely won’t be ready for it. I’ve seen multiple people struggle transferring in at higher levels so just wanted to be upfront about it. Depending on what type of tax work you do, it could be a very valuable skill set. We have people who focus largely on gift and estate tax work so if you have that perspective, even better.

I was a top 50 school, nothing crazy. Our group doesn’t focus on MBAs so I basically started a the bottom. It’s an expensive option and worked for me but maybe not for everyone. We have also hired MS Finance people.

Making a lot of money relative to the average but feeling poor? Median after-tax income was ~$55,000 in 1981 and was ~$73,000 in 2020. Using a Bank of Canada inflation calculator $55,000 in 1981 is equivalent to ~$165,000 today, which would put someone in the top 10% of earners today. But in 1981 the median family had that extra money. Who can I blame?
