It may take some time, but if you’re a high performing new tax manager, I think if you make enough noise and start networking, you could get into advisory, while keeping your current pay and probably your current title. I wouldn’t wait long, it’ll get harder to transition as you move up in tax, not easier (without taking a step back).
I’m in the same exact boat as you, and thankfully I work at a firm that is basically letting me take charge on starting a new service line in management consulting. We already offer outsourced CFO and basic bookkeeping services, but nothing in between which is where management consulting comes along.
I will say it would probably be hard to land a non-tax industry role at the management level if you don’t have any experience in this area because the work is a lot different. If consulting is your end goal, I would say switch now and get the experience while you can, although since you’re at PwC I’m not sure if they would keep you at the same level or make you downgrade so you have to weigh the pros and cons.
Agreed! Thanks a lot
