I am a third year litigator considering leaving the law entirely. I'm not sure if this a "grass is greener" thing or if it's true, but it seems like everyone else is having a way better time than us associates. I currently have the opportunity to work in a completely different field which is both lucrative and has a good work life balance. I also have a new legal opportunity. How do you know when to make the pivot? Do you exhaust all your options in the first career - or just move on?

Do you still like the legal arena or is it a combo of the work and people pushing you out?

Go in-house if you can. I highly recommend pivoting to regulatory law - privacy is a great option in particular if you can break in. Even if regulatory specialty isn't feasible or your thing, in-house offers better WLB options.

I'd add that leaving litigation is not leaving "the law." Plenty of other opportunities to make use of your legal skills that don't touch litigation.

Looking for advice…I have been told that transitioning into L&D should be “easy” given by experience and skills (20+ years in education as a teacher, counselor, district administrator, higher ed. program Director, Academic Affairs Assoc. Dean plus part-time instructional designer). I have an EdD in Leadership (School-system) and an MA in Counseling Psychology.

I have applied for various position levels from specialist to Director with no luck. Any ideas for what level I should be applying for?

In seeking to advance beyond an impending permanent burnout spinning wheels at lower levels, how does one best acquire a top position, say, Director, or apply their skills in a way that’s fulfilling again? Pivot is such a different kind of advancement, its not climbing or moving laterally in a game of chutes and ladders; its more redefining what it means to work with the guts and passion. With a company lead whose mind is out of the game and ready to retire and move on, how do I get his job?

I have no idea if I should get an Econ or accounting degree and keep my current path because it would be much easier. I’m worried about starting over from scratch and regretting the pivot, I am also scared ill have to switch careers later because of money.
