I am a woman with pretty severe ADHD. I’ve taken medicine pretty much every day since I was diagnosed as a child. Currently I take Vyvanse with 10 mg Adderall. Even with the medicine, I sometimes I feel like I’m barely a functioning adult. My SO and I maybe want kids but I’m terrified of 1) do I have to stop medicine while pregnant and breast feeding, 2) could I even do my job without medicine, and 3) could I really take care of a baby?!? I’d love to hear other’s experiences or thoughts! Thanks!

I continued to take my medication on a lower dose while pregnant. My boss already new I had ADHD so she made sure I wasn’t overloaded with work. I had decided to go the formula route so I could get back on the medication and it turns out my kid wasn’t cool with the breast anyway. So, that worked out well.

My husband and I both have ADHD and we’re successfully raising a now six year old. There are things we do now that make life even easier than it was before because we were forced to get it together.

There is an app called Cozi that you can both use to keep a combined grocery list and combined calendar for things that need to be done or school things, etc.

You can pay a company to literally manage all of your bills and things to make that easier if that is a challenge for you.

You can do online grocery shopping and delivery and pay for housecleaning (or even a laundry service) to help. This allows you to have more time with your kid but also to decompress.

Having a baby was really interesting because finally I had something I really was able to focus on for hours without issue. Now, having my son’s picture on my desk helps remind me to stay focused so I can get through work and then hang out with him.

You do. You’re not going to let your kid starve or be in an unsafe environment. It works out even if you have to get creative.

I talked to my doctor about this and she said that I would be able to continue my meds while pregnant. You may find it helpful to just ask your doctor.

For more general barriers, I think of medicine as maybe 30% of the equation for adhd management. I personally can’t function without it, but even with medicine I’m still not fully functional. The rest comes from routines and reasonably healthy living that allow my brain to stay rested and as focused as possible. If you find that your medication occasionally doesn’t work well, it’s probably extraneous factors like stress, fatigue, etc. that are having an impact. Medicine can’t fix it all.

I found it helpful to work with an ADHD coach when I was first diagnosed as an adult and it seemed like medication wasn’t doing what it needed to. You might consider the same! If you search this bowl you’ll find previous recommendations.

Finally, there’s a concept around bipolar disorder called social rhythm therapy (a family member was recently diagnosed so I’m learning about it). The idea is that bipolar management comes from routines and cultivating a healthy circadian rhythm. From my personal experience, it feels like my adhd symptoms are much more manageable in a combination of meds + monitoring my routine to make sure I’m not burning myself out with stimuli.

Thank you for the thoughtful response. You just described my journey last year - realizing I needed to deal with my anxiety and meeting with an ADHD coach. But still, even if logically I know that I can function with medicine and the tools to accommodate myself, I guess my brain still goes to worse case scenario when I think about throwing a kid into the mix!

I’m in the same boat. It’s made me super nervous about taking the step to become a parent, especially since I’ve had to rework my meds recently. I’m 1) glad I’m not the only one weighing this right now and 2) super grateful to hear that there are women who have done it successfully. Looking forward to hearing more recommendations!

I struggled with this for a long time before I decided to stop taking my medication. I was concerned about taking the medication while pregnant and potential harm to my baby as a result. I started exercising regularly and meditating, which helps tremendously.

Any better sleep advice? My husband can’t fall asleep in bed, quickly becoming restless. He can pass out snoring on a couch, in a car, on a plane, but not a bed. He’s tried meditating, using pillows, and teas without any luck. It’s really tough when we travel in hotels and he will sometimes go a full night just laying there with no zzz’s to be found. I am incredibly pissed. For the past 1.5 years my regular doctor’s office has been prescribing my ADHD meds. The nurse practitioner I usually see has been out on maternity leave and all of a sudden the main dr has decided that I don’t need an additional adderall dose in the late afternoon when the xr wears off and that my dosage is too high. I pushed back saying that I work a lot of hours and she agreed to refill this month only. But has now said that they will no longer (cont.)
