I’m also in DC and in investigations work though a couple years senior to you. I’d wait to say anything until your plans are more solid but agree with other poster that you should talk to the partners you work for (and then maybe your practice group chair) when you’re planning the move. I’ve seen folks switch offices at my firm for similar reasons and continue to largely work with people they used to work with from the DC office.
Just be open with the partner who gives you most of your work. Let them know about your S.O.‘s work situation and that you would like to continue at the firm if there is an opportunity to work remotely from the LA office. Assuming that you have been billing and productive while working remotely through the pandemic, I think it is a reasonable request. FWIW, I know associates that made similar moves as junior associates to offices where their practice group had no presence. I think it can work but you may have to be proactive about keeping in touch with others and volunteering to pitch in when you can, etc.
