Short term yes. Long term yes. Staff accountant roles in industry could be ap and ar depending on the size of the company. At least in PA you know what you’re getting and it’s better for your resume long and short term. Not to mention the learning curve is a joke in industry unless you’re lucky.
Being at a Fortune 500 as a staff is different than being a staff at a mom and pop company. Every job is different. It’s not about the title. It’s about the whole package; compensation, benefits, the team, the job duties and responsibilities. Who cares if you’re called a staff making 80k and handling complex issues with a team you love versus being a senior handling mundane tasks making 65k?
That's what I did! Just havent updated my linkedin yet. Life has been very swell since leaving
If it pays more for less working hours who cares. You can work your way up to more responsibilities once they see your work ethic
Fuck the title, worry about responsibilities, work life balance, compensation, and long term growth.

Big step down. In PA you could be interviewing for manager roles in 2 years. How long will it take in industry coming in as staff? Although if you dont care about progression and aren't ambitious its probably better deal. Less responsibility for more $$.

At ey youd be a senior after 2 so your be after your first busy season as a senior. I'd say go for a senior role. Unless you really really want to work at this company and they cant give you one.
Senior in industry is doing 50 percent prep anyway typically, wouldn't worry about title - what is your role going to be? How is the company structured and what are your personal and professional goals? Which role better supports those goals ?
I exited as a senior in public to a senior in industry and was promoted about the same time I would have been had I stayed in public. I also work about 30 percent less hours (40-50 avg) and make 30 percent more comp.
But I also know there is not a clear path to promotion like there is in public. I have no idea when I will get to the next level. Someone may need to retire or leave. I'm ok with that - I make enough and I like my role and the actual balance I get to have a family.
Signed a manager in industry with no direct reports
OP Don't be shy and tell us which tech firm!!!! 😅
A lot of people from PA get their titles knocked down when going to industry. There’s going to be a bit of a learning curve initially, so better to come in as a staff and then get promoted to senior.
I almost wish I had left PA to go to a staff level in industry. When staff ask me questions I don’t always know how to help them because I’ve never done the things they do and don’t know the ins and outs of some of their processes. If you know you’ll have progression at that company and plan to stay there a while I’d say take it. When you move up you’ll have a lot more insight and understanding
I don’t care about my job title as long as the other components are good (mostly concerned about pay, work life balance, and how good my boss/team is). Just be sure you are able to articulate your roles and responsibilities on your resume or when you interview for the job after this one.
I dont think so. Im doing the same thing.
Depends on the company tho and the job
A senior is just a glorified associate. What matters is your experience.... likewise there are “managers” in industry that know squat.. and sr. Managers in B4 that know squat.
Are you young, no kids, no wife/fiance, can live with parents or rent a studio? and if I read it right, you want to go up in the ladder? then why leaving for money?
Asking this because I think 99% of staff accountant roles out there will not provide you the experience / struggle (out of comfort zone) that a first year senior in PA can do to you.
I would say more.. the senior years in PA are the most important ones to prepare you to be an executive, either if you continue at a big4 or go to industry... think about that
sometimes we need to go check if the neighbors lawn is indeed greener than ours, which is fine... I did it myself and learned the good and bad things on both sides.
It seems you have the right reasons to leave
The role would be at a brand name tech company. Pay would be a significant increase. My recruiter says that other staff accountants he placed there are all CPAs, big 4, 3 years experience. I still don't like it though - I don't want to be a staff for another couple years.
@ASM1 exactly my thoughts. I plan on staying in this city for another 2-3 years and then moving away so I want to make sure I am willing to stay at my next job for 2 years.
I’ve always heard industry moves slower to promote. But I guess you gotta ask what you want from your job/life, and go from there. For me I plan on sticking around for a long time in accounting/consulting and so personally I’m not going to entertain a jump until I make manager. Cause there’s no way Ill be okay with being a staff/senior longer than I have to be.
Does it pay more? That’s the only thing that counts! Who cares about the title? You would still be an employee, right? Not like you were part of management!
I wouldn’t worry about the title as long as it’s the pay bump you want
Agree!
Unless you are either partner or staff. But I get what you mean.
EDIT: You are either are a partner or just staff.
Do not listen to these people, stay in public take the senior route and not any shortcuts to the top, you will have plenty of time to leave in the future then and get more experience...if you work 30% more now, it's 30% more knowledge and experience, better for long term
Titles don’t mean anything.
Yeah, if you hate PA wait a few more years. S2 is a big one to leave. The longer you wait the better it’ll get! Lol
So this new position has no compliance? In house compliance is just as terrible. Trust me since I’ve been there. You will be staff so unless they outsourced this function that is what get to do too.
Yea don’t do it! Get senior stay until manager then leave.
