I am absolutely miserable at my job. Not sure if it’s the team/where I work, being agency side vs client, being a strategist, or the industry in general.

Is anyone else struggling or had issues like this? If so, what did you do? I don’t have offers for a new agency (have applied to many) and I don’t want to quit without having a new gig set up. But I’m not sure what to do.

I had the same sort of thing going on in 2021. Hated my job and pretty much everything about it for the first time in my 18 year career and couldn’t figure out why. I personally just kept my head down and opened up my laptop every stupid morning and months later things started to get better. Looking back, I think it was the projects/work that was making me miserable. As soon as I was moved to another account my mood improved immediately.

You are not alone. I am going thru the same thing right now. I’ve been at my current job for 1.5 years and I’ve been pretty much miserable for a year now. I’ve moved a couple accounts so far which has not improved my feelings. I have worked at two indie shops before I came to this big holding co agency so I know for sure that I am itching to go back independent. I have been waiting for the “right opp” to come along for a while now but seriously considering taking a break for the rest of the year and going freelance in Jan ‘23. But it’s easier said than done With all the recession talk and layoffs.

Have you asked yourself what you think makes you so miserable? Identifying specific things can lead to more specific things to work on and improve. There are days I still feel miserable at mine, ha! Ultimately it’s down to your desire to improve. Sounds like you have a bit of soul searching to do imo.

Can you take a paid leave of absence? I’m right there with you and it can be hard to diagnose the problem when you’re IN it. Sometimes distance does the trick. And when we are in strategy, we’ll, we are pros at being way too much in our own heads.

I’ve been miserable for the most part. I’m not financially able to up and leave without something, so I kept at it and signed an offer this week. Took me over 6 months of applying and interviews though.

Same here. But I’ve realized that I love what I do, just my boss and certain coworkers who make my day to day miserable. Take some time off if you can to recharge/get fresh perspective and narrow down what specifically it is that makes you miserable. And if it’s just the current job then actively start applying/interviewing.

I’ve been very privileged to be able to leave situations like that without a back-up. But what I will say is that I worried that I preferred in-house over agency, and I’ll tell you, I much prefer agency. The in-house I where I moved was completely as uncoordinated and messy as you would expect, from spectating agency side. If you don’t want to create your own systems and organize processes on your own terms and handle the annoying client every day, I would stay agency side.

What do you like and hate about your job? If it’s the team can you change it? People internally always make/break it for me. Being respected. Having a boss that’s better than myself and supportive…and learning. If I wasn’t learning anything and bored, felt like my opinion didn’t count, or was not challenged by the work I found I was miserable. Also change is good. If you don’t want to leave without a job can you move internally? Also use this as motivation to look harder elsewhere in places you haven’t. Look at LinkedIn for companies you want to work and see if you are connected in sone way. Beat the rush of applicants by getting your foot in the door and having a personal connection you can ask about the company…and read Glassdoor with a lens of reality vs HR posts

Looking to come out of "retirement" after staying home to raise my girls for the last 5 years. I've always worked in sales due to finding out it's something I am blessed at. I have a few questions, but will start with my strengths first. I've surpassed sales goals at previous positions that my superior regionals could not achieve. Very limited characters allowed, very sorry of that sounds conceded. I don't know where to apply or where I fit anymore. I don't have a degree.
