Yes, tax evasion is illegal. If you want to do it legally, you’d need to change your residence address and get rid of your rental (you would still pay non-resident income tax on income earned in NY based on your work location), or do the calendar method to allocate your time worked in each state. NJ taxes are also high and if you file a resident tax return in NJ, you get credit for taxes paid to NY and then pay any difference.
Idk about you guys but at accenture we have to say where we’re working and get taxed there. So if you’re working in jersey you should be noting that on your time sheet and getting taxed NJ

NYC taxes all your income if you work in the city and are a tri state resident (they trap PA too)
