I am considering making a proposition to the partners at my firm to take over our satellite office and make it my own whereby I would be associated but not employed by the firm. Lots of factors at play making this a good idea for all, but I need help on how to structure the plan and present it so it’s mutually beneficial and attractive to them. Anyone done anything similar and willing to chat/help me come up with a plan? Or do I need some kind of business coach and how would I find one?

I represent small firms as outside General Counsel and have done similar arraignments, happy to chat - DM if you’d like to set up a free consult.

Looks like a complicated situation. How did you go about it, OP? I'm curious if they accepted your proposal/plan.

Hi! Were you able to come up with a plan? An update on this would be much appreciated.

I started my firm recently (immigration) and am a true solo. I have experience in a few very specific case types and do lots of research, but don't have enough experience to easily strategize for each consult. I know this will come in time as I do more types of cases and have a background of knowledge to pull from, but I need to grow my business too. I think hiring a very capable paralegal would be the best option, but I'm paying myself 1k a week. I doubt I'd be able to pay an employee. Ideas?

Met Life Legal Plan has been a recent add. I have picked up a few probates, but have to bill for endless consults and doc review that yield less than 120$ per transaction which is not doing it. There is a category for up to 400$ for 4 hrs for items not covered. Have any used that category or I am being too conservative in submissions for billing.

I see a lot of opportunities to do contract reviews or other corporate matters in states I’m not barred in. I don’t typically take those matters, but I’m curious what those rules are. I’ve definitely seen large firms handle out of state contracts and acquisitions all the time and I actually know other attorneys who do it too. I just haven’t gotten comfortable with that. Anyone have thoughts?

I’m seriously considering starting up a solo shop. I have a very reliable stream of business (family friend has one patent that was infringed multiple times, huge firms have taken a few of these on contingency). Pros: I don’t have law school debt; I could follow these large firm’s general trajectory in prosecuting these cases; high risk tolerance (no kids, mortgage, etc). Cons: I’m inexperienced generally (class of 2019), and not familiar with patent law specifically. Thoughts?

Does anyone else get super annoyed at having to provide the same information , documents or research to a partner numerous times? Even copying the assigned secretary doesn’t help because they just regurgitate the request rather than saying “hey she gave this to you already”. Sometimes I respond with massive attitude and then have to rewrite because I need my job…lol.

I'm a solo bringing in Associate to become partner. Associate has been compensated with a base salary, plus 1/3 of earnings for business he brings in. Firm expenses are around 55-60% of gross revenue. He brings in around 30% of revenue. How best can I bring him in, and at what percentage to be fair? Was thinking 20%, with 5% incremental increases as his business grows hopefully to greater than 30% of total revenue. Thoughts?
