I am curious how many of you allow students to turn in their work up to the end of the quarter or semester. And if so...how do you deem it necessary in an IEP? Comparing to what I do and seeking outside expierences. TIA

My son’s classes allow it until the end of the grading period- quarter or trimester. Some teachers have allowed retaking tests but to do so must have all work turned in and show corrections or some other form of studying before retake- these were for MS and HS

like

I wouldn’t write that in an IEP since many students and uninvolved parents may wait until the last minute to do anything. In my opinion, the work you assign is to help strengthen content knowledge as they go and if they just complete it right away there could potentially be larger gaps in learning. I always look at it on an individual basis and make the determination from there for end of quarter work to be accepted. Also, is there a policy written in your school’s student handbook that should be taken into consideration?

As a high school teacher we also have to consider we are preparing them for their future career. How many work places will let them do work whenever?

I would caution adding that to an IEP. I can not think of one reason this should be an accommodation. If a student has a situation in which you would need to give them this time hopefully you could ask admin to provide this.

In my district we have a district- wide policy of this, so IEP accommodations state 1.5 times extra time but not beyond district policy.

Additional Posts in Special Education Teachers

Hello Teachers! I hope all of you are doing well to the start to the new school year. I’d like to ask those of you who are California special education teachers a question. IEPs service minutes lunch snd breaks being included in daily minutes.
64,800 min. are required number of service minutes per year( for grades 9-12), you divide that by 180 ( 180 school days) = 360. In those 360 minutes of their day ;lunch & break is included correct? I mean some students have that as goals in there IEP. Help

I have been teaching students with special needs for 21 years now. The class size used to be 12:1. Now it’s 15:1, but you can have up to 18 students with the variance. Now my Principal said that you can have up to 19 students!!!! Is anyone else noticing that the self contained class is getting larger?

What are some strategies that can be implemented with a 4th grade student who’s on a 1.4-2.4reading level, according to the STAR test. This student just transferred in and he is very well spoken, has a large vocabulary(uses words that typical 4th grade students may not), and has a great creative imagination. His goals include reading fluency and written expression. He cannot spell nor read basic sight words without help. Sometimes, it seems as if he is waiting for me to read before he tries.

Hello, I was wondering if anyone knows of or has curriculum for students in a Study Skills class?

I have been given three sections of Study Skills with 15-20 students in each.
I have always taught SDC, but this year my district said that we can do that now. When I got my credential I was not allowed to teach Resource classes unless I took classes and received the Resource Certificate. Does anyone know if this is legal?

I received my credentials in 1996/1997 and the other in 1998

There’s nothing like waking up to a call on August 1 from my district coordinator telling me that they want to move me from my middle school resource room SpEd position (which I love) to K-5 Setting 3 SpEd position. I told her all the reasons that won’t work for me and even gave her another idea that would require a non-licensed teacher to be moved so I could take her place at the hs. So, I’ll be spending my Monday applying for a new job in another district. How’s your Monday going so far? 😭😔

Hi. I am a Transition teacher in California. I would like to know what is the ratio of students to staff for community outings in your districts? I have been teaching in my district for 20+ years and it has always been 4:1 ratio for our moderate/severe transition classes. Now our director is saying it's 6:1 and I don't feel like this is safe for our students.

Question: If SPED students are receiving their Resource Minutes AFTER the regular school hours from their peers (8:30-10:30) is that Legal?
