Where’s the lie
You’re underselling yourself.
By a lot.
After taxes, benefits, etc., that’s like $25 an hour, which is what an intern makes.
For freelance, you should be charging *at least* $90-100 an hour to cover all your bases. Calculate the estimated hours to start and finish the project, add an additional few hours for cushioning, and charge as a whole rather than per hour.
Noted! Thanks for the reply and opening my eyes
Where are you located? $70 and up seems right in most places.
As a senior you should be billing by project and charge for the value you provide. I don’t do hourly because I can get a lot done in 1 hour and there is no incentive for me to finish the project in a timely manner.
Right! Typically I do but recently have been taking on projects through a 3rd party and they require an hourly rate. Looks like I’ve undersold substantially.
Thanks for the response!

More than that as a senior designer. How many years of experience do you have?
7 years of experience
Mentor
Hell yes.
Where are you located?
How many YOE do you have?
What kind of clients are you working with?
What kind of deliverables are you handing off for that $45/hr?
Why are you not charging per project?
When did you start charging this rate?
Have you increased it at all since?
So many questions
1. Located in SoCal
2. 7 years of experience
3. A wide variety of clients (grocery industry, beer, small business needing branding work, Amazon store brands, entertainment, etc.)
4. Deliverables range from logo work, branding, to digital ads, packaging, web design, and others
5. I typically do charge by project, but recently have been hired on by a 3rd party that oh by the hour. I’m not used to billing by the hour nor do I think it makes sense, thus the dilemma.
6. I started charging this rate recently, typically I charge a flat rate by project with payment up front and OD
7. I’m thinking I should have a conversation to increase the rate considering I can work quickly in most cases
Thanks for the time to respond btw!
