Your question is a bit confusing but I'll give this a shot.
Right now, you have two choices:
1. Accept the external offer
2. See if you can wait to see if you get your internal offer
3. Decline the external offer and put your effort into getting the internal offer.
There are risks with all of these and it really depends what your end goal is. Does this external offer meet your salary goals, position goals and do you like the company? Do you want to leave your current company?
If you have any interest in pursuing the internal role and you feel that role is a better fit than the external offer that you already have, I'd recommend either waiting the internal interview process out or trying to use this external offer to negotiate things to move along.
If you opt to push things along, you have to be prepared to leave in the event they don't move things along. Don't jump to putting in your notice unless you're really just ready to leave.
Communicate it like this (verbally to your company) "I wanted to let you know that I explored an external opportunity and recently received an offer. I am still very interested in X position (the position your interviewing for) and would prefer to pursue this internal route to stay with X company. However I do have a deadline with this offer. Would you be able to give me any feedback on where I stand as an internal candidate?"
Get your feedback and then decide. It might not be worth staying. At that point, you can put in your notice.
In the meantime, negotiate your salary at the external offer to see if you can get any other perks to lure you away from your internal opportunities. And request a week to decide. This will buy you some time.
Thank you. This is great advice! I think the interview went great, however I do not know how everyone else’s went. I guess it doesn’t hurt to see where I stand and if I am a real contender after all the interviews.
