1400 is low, like really low. Try 1600-1800. Even 1900 is a deficit. Listen to your body, if you cut too deep it won’t help you maintain in the long run.
500 is a lot and hard to keep sustainable. Sustainable = 10% under maintenance. 20% is aggressive but doable for a short time (and that could equal 500).
First: what diet are you doing?
Second: How much water do you drink? This could help not waking up hungry. You would need to drink at least a cup a couple of hours before bed time.
Just calorie counting, down from what I'm told sustainment would be at 2000 (myfitnesspal) to between 1400-1600. I'm good about drinking water, a lot of times I wake up because I have to pee and then can't fall back asleep...
This means you’ve starved yourself for too long. Please pause your diet and normalize your appetite otherwise you’ll start binging as a survival mechanism. Apps like my fitness pal are not always accurate so you may need more calories based on your activity and daily exercise. Please listen to our body and have a week or two of eating normally before going to a less restrictive diet (up your calories to 1700/1800). I promise taking it slow and steady is much better than starving yourself to the point of waking up hungry.
I’m speaking from experience (kept myself at 1400 calories while working out for 6 month). I lost a lot of weight but eventually gained a binge eating disorder which took years to battle and normalize.
Exactly the same happened to me as McK 1.
More broadly, over time I’ve oscillated in weight, but the times I kept it off was when I had lost weight gradually.
Can I actually recommend some carbs before going to sleep? It works well for quite a few people.
I do hot, unsweetened almond milk, sweetener, a spoon of cocoa. It's super low calorie but so satisfying before bed.
Definitely not enough calories and possibly not good quality calories so your body is craving nutrients...hit me up if you want to chat. I am actually a health coach on the side of my consulting work.
Absolutely, I should have been clear on good quality calories. Not all calories are created equal and your body doesn't use them the same for energy and nutrients. Thanks for the clarification!
There’s a lot of interesting writing out there now to the effect that losing weight has less to do with eating loss overall and more to do with eating more of the correct food. Just decreasing calories and following a “calories in, calories out” approach generally doesn’t work for most people since they either can’t follow it (because your body eventually demands more food), or just put the weight back on once they return to normal eating.
Having 1-2 hard boiled eggs before bed is also super helpful. I back what everyone else is saying also about decreasing the deficit. I tried forever to lose weight by dropping to 1600 calories but always got hungry and ended up binging it back. Unless you need rapid weight loss for a medical reason, I think a very minor deficit will statistically have better long run results
You can try fiber supplements? If you’ve only just started, it may take a week or two to get used to it
