I am doing well in my current role and am not in a rush to move yet but I have been slowly thinking about my next move. How do you go about thinking /planning what’s next?

From year 1 to year 15 of your career, focus on accumulating breadth and depth in your functional area of expertise and very importantly, acquiring critical experiences (project leadership, people mgmt, local/regional/global roles, turn around projects/teams, etc) - generally i recommend ~2 years in the same assignment so you can master whatever is that you are learning - in this stage, the focus should not be $ but rather the competencies you can learn within each role u move into. After you have built a good solid foundation of broad skills and hopefully established your personal brand, look for roles in other functional areas to build versatility (very important to have both “core business” and Technology skills these days). Then you think strategically about what roles you can climb up the ladder in the executive track and get the big buck$ and hopefully have a shot to make it to executive suite one day.

Thank you for the insight, I believe I am currently in that that later stage you speak to and have built both core business and technology skills. However, I find myself asking that question about what’s next and where would I like to grow as a executive, that doesn’t necessarily mean I don’t like my current organization but I also don’t want to pigeonhole myself. At this point , I am unsure but wanted to get some ideas on how to proceed.

Here is how I think- what do you want to do next in career- need promotion/ic/broader role? All are not necessarily tied together. I have also started factoring in how long I have been in the firm, sometimes it helps to go out there and come back, that way it helps to build a reputation and network outside of the firm too

It depends...if you want to be a functional expert, then focus on building SME expertise, but generally there are limited number of opportunities to grow within one function. If you aspire to be CEO one day, you must develop breadth in other areas in addition to maintaining your core functional expertise (this is referred sometimes as T shape skills) - taking this route will open a larger number of roles you can chose from to move up. A constant that should be developed irrespective of the path you chose is self awareness and EQ and to value your team mates and employees. Being a great person and a great people person is critical in the current workplace and will be even more valuable in the years to come. I believe the leader of tomorrow will has to check three boxes, business, people and technology acumenship.
