I am dreading winter. The sun sets by 4 pm where I am (Toronto) and it makes me all sorts of depressed. I am on top of my vitamin D, and I go to the gym 3x weekly, but it doesn’t help. Does anyone have any suggestions? I’ve heard of sun lamps but I’m not sure how / whether they work. Would love to hear your experiences / recommendations - what works to elevate your mood in winter?

Move to Southern California and tell your kids you used to live in Toronto and be cold all the time. None of this other stuff is comparable

It’s winter in Toronto right now ?

funny

lol I’m just trying to prepare for it ahead of time.

Try the lamp for sure. Also try giving more during the holidays! I know not everyone celebrates Christmas, but it may help your mood. I love winter and the changing of the seasons. Love watching holiday and romantic movies. Not sure if you’re into any of that, but focus on what you like and change your mindset.

like

I like that. Focus on what you like. Thanks!

Make your home an oasis that will make you feel the thankful for the cold weather keeping you in! That, and maybe start using the darker hours to host happy hours or catch up with family/friends.

I love my home. But it doesn’t necessarily perk me up when I’m down. Guess I’m just ungrateful lol.

The Nordic cultures have a great mentality of embracing winter - maybe try learning from them. Not sure there is any good skiing around Toronto but maybe cross country or snow shoeing or skating?

I also live in Canada but in Vancouver and I love winter because I go to whistler and snowboard, drink hot chocolate, and sit inside and read a book by the fire. I also spend time in the sauna, steam room, and hot tub. The winter can be special if you look for the opportunities all though I will say Toronto winters are particularly long and nasty.

THIS! I just moved from Toronto to Calgary and now I can’t WAIT for the winter because of all the winter sports.

Sadly, it’s hard to get to any relatively good skiing/snowboarding spots from Toronto.

Light therapy does have evidence behind it, might be worth a try (have been considering it myself). Higher intensity cardio helps my mood more than other exercise. Having creative outlets and surrounding myself with more color seems to help as well.

In Iceland they call their holiday lights “winter lights” and keep them up throughout the winter, along with painting the homes different colors. It helps.

Reading, video games and watching shows/movies are a great way to pass the time indoors.

What about a trip? Even if it’s domestic? I bet Quebec City would be nice in the winter (haven’t been yet). Or maybe Montreal? Banff? A winter trip helps make the time pass quickly.

The only trips I would want to do are ones to sunny places. But thanks for the ideas! Saving them for summer / fall.

like

Toronto too. I plan little skiing trips throughout the winter (think Jay Peak, Whiteface, Mt St Anne, or even just Blue Mountain) to get some outside time and exercise instead of an indoor gym.. I love it!

Already have quite the plant collection since 2020! I agree, they make the space nicer, more welcoming and interesting.

Definitely do the sun lamp! Get a good one! You will definitely see the results. Start with a few minutes and dose up.

Use bulbs you can change the temperature of, it can have an enormous impact. I live in SoCal and I’ve basically had the house completely closed up due to heat, and it’s given me this kind of perpetual grog because visually the indoor light is the same basically 24/7. Setting my interior lights to a nice daylight color during the day and then a cozy warm color at night actually helped me to feel clear again. Do you have an option to try to get outside and take a walk for maybe 20-30 minutes in the early afternoon a few days a week? If it’s even remotely possible, make time for it.

Hi everyone! Just found this bowl and noticed it hasn’t been overly active in awhile. Let’s change that!

Also, I started doing the daily readings on the Conference of Bishops website. Anyone interested in joining me to set up a group bible study of sorts via zoom or something? Could be a good way to meet one another personally and professionally, and it’ll force us to hold one another accountable to do it everyday.

Honest question: I’m training for my first marathon. Does it really matter where I get my calories from? I am burning between 1,000-2,000 calories a day training and my body seems to be hanging in there ok. Does it truly matter if I’m eating ribeye vs lean chicken? I feel like getting to 3,000-4,000 calories a day in a healthy fashion is really really hard. Just from a volume standpoint.

I’d like to sleep through from 11-7 as I used to. I guess the good thing is I don’t need an alarm anymore.

I do walk right now, oddly at a slow pace, for about 3-4 km each day. If there any kind of strength training I can introduce in my regimen to err not feel all so depressed with the way I am in for.

I started to dramatically reduce my calorie intake in hopes to lose weight. Like most, I gained almost 60 pounds during the pandemic. On top of that I hurt my back (herniated disc).

i’m at about 1500-1800 calories. I was usually around 3000 cal. I’m 6’4 and 275 pounds.

I have a fair amount of muscle under my fat. With reducing my calorie intake so much do I run a risk of losing my muscle before my fat?
