While we’re on the topic of teacher disrespect: https://forward.com/life/162899/what-s-with-all-the-teacher-hate/?gamp “Teachers had opted out of the capitalist game; they weren’t in this world for money. There could be only one reason for that: they were losers. They were dimwitted, unambitious, complacent, unimaginative, and risk-averse. They were middle class.”

Tomorrow when you are back, your team and your work will still be there. So enjoy today!
Repeat that and make it your mantra for today!

Girl. Turn off your phone and head to the spa.
You aren’t saving lives. Also be the role model for the team and actually take time off. The best thing for your team is if you come back tomorrow refreshed and with a story on how you enjoyed your time away.
Hi OP! Sharing my experience hoping it’s helpful -
I actually took two days off last week for the same reason. Nothing grand planned, just stayed home and napped, read, etc. I call these days my Mental Health Day. It’s not the same as a sick day, but just the feeling of NEEDING a day with nothing to do calls for a need to rest just like if we were sick.
Initially I felt bad when I would take mental health days, but then I realized a few things. 1 I’m actually doing everyone a favor by taking a day off and coming back fully refreshed, a 100%. I have a better mental emotional capacity to contribute and actually be helpful to my team, even including being in a good healthy mood/state and hopefully spreading the energy. 2 I swapped places and thought about it like this - if I knew my team just needed a break, a day to do nothing because I know they’re at it nonstop with work and personal life (good things can still be busy and tiring) then I’d genuinely be happy to cover for a day or two so they can take some time for themselves. This made me think that my team probably thinks the same for me, and this is how we grow to have each other’s backs. 3 Knowing ourselves is very important, so I think even knowing when we need to rest and take a break is a big step (it was for me after being trained to do things nonstop). So I’m glad you were able to see this and give yourself a rest day.
Hope you’re able to really do what gives you the most rest today, without feeling guilty about it! 😊
Don’t check your email on your day off to start. And find something to do that is for yourself - read a book watch trash tv I go for a walk or to the spa
Self care
I know it’s OK to do this. But how do I let go of these insecure feelings that I shouldn’t be taking off?
Stop checking email! If you’re doing that you may as well be working. You took off, everyone is ok, don’t log on and go use the time for yourself! Do not look at email until 8 or 9am tomorrow.
Enjoy your day off
Agree with what everyone else says. You have taken a mental health day. Also, please do not feel guilty about not being there for your team. If the team cannot get along for one day without you, there is something wrong that needs to be fixed.
Thanks everyone. I actually had trouble turning off notifications so I just put my phone in airplane mode for the day. I had a hard time getting back into work this morning but I do feel better for having take the day off.
