I am from public acctg and a Senior for 5 years. I’ve had this conversation on my promotion to Manager and was told I need another year. I feel demotivated and getting frustrated that they do not see me as someone who can be a Manager.

In the big picture of your career one year extra at a level is not very substantial.

Is that not normal at your firm? At PwC 3 years per level is the norm.

We have this 2 levels of Senior - 1) new Senior 2) experienced Senior Some stay 2-3 years per Level & it is very frustrating.

Are you saying you have been a senior for five years or in public accounting for a total of five years?

Sounds like it might be time to move firms. At EY people are generally staff for two years, senior for three, then promoted to manager. It’s possible to get held back a year but not super likely. If you can get into a big 4 as an experienced senior or new manager you would probably see faster progression. Good luck!

I know that this will be hard but sometimes we need to ask for the specific milestones you need to accomplish to get to the next level. You should have a monthly/quarterly meeting to make sure you are on track. Otherwise they will keep moving the goal posts and you will keep getting stuck.

Been working remote since the beginning of the pandemic. Back in the office in January and trying to finalize childcare. Recruiters connecting with me for new job opportunities. Scared to even consider a shift out of my current company where I may have some flexibility bc I've been there for so long, but they're dragging their feet with giving me a well deserved raise. So unsure what to do. Shift now, or cont to negotiate $ at current job or hit the road and let the childcare figure itself out.

Hi there. Earlier this year I laid out a business case for why I should get a raise & I asked for a $20-25k annual raise. I got $15k. I found out another person also asked for a raise around the same time. He didn’t give a business case, he just asked;he got the full amount he asked for ($70k). He is more senior than me, has been there longer, & we are not in the same function. However, something is just not sitting right with me about this situation. Any thoughts? Am I just over-analyzing?

I’m up for promotion this month. I will be in charging jobs this busy season. What do you all use to stay organized? As a staff I was using just a regular planner. Now I’m wondering if a project planner would be better. I use the goodnotes app for a planner currently. I’d prefer keeping it digital so I have it on my phone if I forget my iPad.

I need some advice- how do I ask for a pay raise? I recently joined Deloitte (Toronto) as a consultant 5 months ago and I make 65k. Am I doing it wrong or right? i just started making $120K base (jumping from 80K). I thought that’s going to be significantly more of take home pay, but turns out I’m only going to bring home $4.5K/month. which is same as before 🥺. This is because I’m gonna start maxing out my 401K, HSA, Roth, and buying company stocks (which I didn’t do before). Damn those things add up quickly! 😭 120K - 9K FICA tax - 20K Federal tax - 19.5K max 401k - 6K Roth - 2.6K HSA - 8K company stock = 54K/year. 🤪
