I am going in house with an incredible opportunity. Why do I feel like a “failure” because I am leaving biglaw? I am happy but part of me feels like I’m weak and gave up and couldn’t make it in biglaw. Ugh

Funny. When I was at a firm I always thought of finding a good in-house spot as “making it.” Now that I’m in-house I still feel that way.

This make me feel so much better! I think the shitty “hustle” culture has gotten to me. I don’t know, I feel like biglaw is so abusive sometimes 😞

Think you’re having a normal thought. A lot of associates secretly harbor the idea that the ultimate success is becoming a leading big law partner, even if that path is at odds with what we want out of life.

I think big law depends on people having the idea that being there is the only way to “make it” as a lawyer. That’s the only way they can maintain that abusive culture

A6 that is so true!!! Thank you for this perspective!! Work smarter not harder haha

This just goes to show the warped sense of reality in the mindset of big law associates. The biggest losers in the law profession are big law associates, especially big law associates that aren’t in the major markets and get paid chips for the same long hours. We literally get abused day in day out, no respect at all, and then we (big law associates) turn our noses up at people that leave for a normal life in-house? Think about it objectively… who are the real losers here? The people that stick around and continue to let themselves get abused because they don’t want to lose their big law identity? Or the people that have enough respect for themselves to leave? Unless you are on partnership track or biding your time for the right exit opportunity, you’re an actual big law loser - nothing more, nothing less.

Omg you are SO right. I’m trading in late night work, weekend works, abusive partners, constant stress and anxiety, and so many other things to have WLB, work with people who are chill, protected vacation time, and way less stress!! Ahhh. Thank you for this perspective. I really needed it!

You are a success for doing what you want to do and finding a way to make it happen! I also just put my notice in to go house. I’m so relieved.

Waiting for my in-house offer after 6 rounds so I can be out 😳 Congrats you all.

Really?! I’m so jealous of you finding a good in-house opportunity!!! I’m a totally failure for being abused in biglaw and not making time to get myself out.
