I am going to get someone pregnant just to take paternity leave. That seems to be the only kind of leave that is respected around here.

There are so many life events that require leave; it shouldn’t be tied solely to reproduction. EVERYONE should have an allotment of “life leave” that they could use as their life demands. People who want kids could use it for having kids, single people could use it for the extra demands that come with taking care of everything by yourself, everybody could use it for big changes like moving or bereavement. Only recognizing ONE need for leave is just dumb.

Sharing my story: I carry an abnormal gene in which me and my wife's first child was affected. We decided with our second child to use IVF. We started our journey in January 2021 and my wife went through 4 IVF cycles using my sperm in a 9 month span (her choice). We decided after the 4th round failed to go a different route and use sperm donation to rid us of the gene. During 2022, she went through 4 rounds of IUI and finally got one that stuck. She is now 14 weeks pregnant and due in April 😊

Advice to young lawyers. Read a book.

I saw the thread about savings and many young lawyers (20s and 30s) don’t know how to open up a brokerage account or invest in their 401k. I know they don’t teach personal finance in school (though they should!), but my advice is that you should go to your local library and read a book about the subject. You have the skills necessary but you must invest in yourself. No one will look out for you.

I usually stay on to check emails until 10pm-12am. BUT when we go back to office, how will we handle those random tasks that require immediate attention? What if im in the middle of my commute? Do we just not go home until late? Will the expectation to be on 24 7 relax a bit?

1st year/stub in Texas. I was a summer at my firm in both 2019-2020. Thought I preferred litigation, and told the firm that last summer. My firm flaunts about being involved in the community and giving back. Offices across the country do a day of service where attys and staff do community service. There is a fee/cost for the volunteer activities and the attys are responsible for paying for it.

Now I strongly believe in donating for different causes but this seems strange that a big firm that flaunts about giving back can’t even pay for the meager volunteer cost for each office. Is this normal at other firms?
