They may let you go right away. If they do, make sure it’s clear to them you expect to be paid for the 2 weeks. They should pay you, otherwise why would people provide the courtesy of notice.
People provide the courtesy of notice so as the employer may prepare for your absence and plan accordingly. If you're on a project and you are in charge of a specific role, that role has to be transitioned, which takes time. If there is nothing to prepare, notice isn't required.
You are on the bench. There is nothing to prepare. The company may choose to pay you for the 2 weeks, but they have no obligation to keep you and some definitely will cut you loose asap. Telling them you expect to be paid is pretty laughable to be honest. They have no obligation to honor that.
A1 - true but it comes with a lot of exclusions for age , gender etc
It’s very rare to not get paid for those two weeks- you should be fine
I’ve had team members leave earlier than 2 weeks (end of project and needed to restrict access to sensitive info). And HR was very clear that we still needed to pay them for the full 2 weeks (which I fully supported)
I was in the same situation when I left my last firm. I was going to a competitor, so they let me go right away, but they still paid the 2 weeks.
Also, not giving notice could make you ineligible for a re-hire, and it will definitely burn some bridges with people. Consulting is such a small universe that you don't want to do that.
Give two weeks, they may ask you to stay or they may ask you to leave, either way it’s the right thing to do
I was in the same situation and they were fine with my two weeks notice.
