I am graduating with a degree in PR and a lot of internship experience. Do you think taking a post-grad internship with a major agency is a good entry point? Or should I hold out for full-time?

The odds of you being hired full time at a major agency right out of post grad is very, very low. Agencies use their internship programs as a way to see what types of work and teams best fit the intern, and then seek to place them in full time roles wherever and whenever possible. If you’re dead-set on a full time role, your best bet will be a smaller agency or one of the places you previously interned, where you’re a known entity.

Start looking now and through the next couple months. Most large agencies have internship programs that will kick off and bring in a class of interns for a June or July 1 start date, and then won’t have another wave until January.

Why not do both? By that, I mean you’re not going to get any experience holding out...but there’s nothing stopping you from sending out your resume (which will keep evolving) while you’re in the midst of a post-grad internship. Get after it and good luck to you! Such a scary but exciting time in your life.

I manage our internship program at a big firm, and we only hire at the entry level from that program. But, the no. 1 thing I tell our folks is to keep looking. Sometimes we’ve had to let even the most incredible folks go because we couldn’t make the business case to our holding company. Nearly all our interns find a job by the end (some leverage our connections). Im biased but you’ll learn so much more in a big agency, working alongside the best counselors on big brands that can afford the breadth of PR offerings. You can always get hired in a smaller shop later, but you need more exposure when you’re junior.

Few big agencies are hiring full time. We are all starting with paid internships with intent to hire within 6 months. It’s the new normal in nyc

Thank you! I appreciate your insight. It was so helpful!

Do both but look into full time work at a smaller agency, you'll get so much more experience and develop your skills significantly faster at a small agency with high client demands than a larger PR firm

coming from a boutique, i think you learn a lot more & a lot quicker from the smaller shops, especially your media relations chops. big agencies do have more structure & learning processes though. whatever you do in the end, just remember to avoid weber shandwick like THE PLAGUE for anything entry level / junior...

I think if you’re dead-set on a major agency as your starting point then an internship is a good entryway, but I’ve just graduated in December and I’m starting at a full-time position for the start of March. I didn’t have my sights set on any particular agency, but I only applied where I felt their work and creativity stood out to me; if you make that your standard it’s kind of a different playing field. I’ve been applying since November, interviewing since December and hired by February. So 2 months of interviewing compared to everyone telling me it’d be at least 6-8

If you’re desperate to work at a big agency, I’d also consider working at a smaller business that is run by someone who used to be senior at a big agency. You’ll get great access, responsibility and be a more key player sooner. Then you can transition when it’s right.

Do both. An internship started my career and I highly recommend that avenue.

If I were you I would start out at a smaller PR agency where you can gain broader experiences and wear a few different hats. This will stack your resume and network list and allow you to climb the agency ladder quicker. Big agencies are fine but many times at a smaller agency you can get better work life balance, competitive compensation, and more recognition and opportunities to succeed (because you aren’t just another replaceable number). I know many smaller agency folks who earn considerably more, have a better overall life, and who have leapfrogged their peers who just targeted the big name agencies.

Intern is the BEST way to get in! It is a chance to prove yourself.

Yes, intern!!

I have a supervisor who nitpicks things the way you would for an intern or a junior and I’m trying to navigate. I had a positive 6 month review recently so I think she sees it as constructive rather than cutting me down. For example, she will ask me to attend a meeting in her stead or write an email for her and she will completely edit my notes or my email not spelling errors or anything but completely reformatting and there’s no real pattern to the way she does it so I’m not learning. I’m graduating with a masters in finance this fall. I just accepted an offer with Unilever as graduate finance intern. The problem is, i feel that I may be making a career mistake by entering the industry without having banking/consulting experience first. I’m just not sure if having that background vs. this career path with get me to a higher level in the long term. The FT offer will be an AFM. Prior to grad school, I worked 1 year in sales, 2 years in WM, and have a bachelors in economics. TY

Getting an internship as a Masters student - I have been looking for an internship in the NLP field for the upcoming summer but find it extremely hard to get one. 1) there aren’t many companies that offer internships in this field 2) a lot of them (esp big ones, which tend to offer internship in this field) require a PhD… My question is - does it make sense for a master student enrolled in a 2-year program to get an internship during summer?

Just finishing my first week in as an audit intern and genuinely I have no idea what I'm doing or even a general idea of the audit process. The senior associate left the engagement last week so it's just me and an associate, and they don't have time to give me instruction. Am I stupid or did the e-learns not prepare me for any of this? The training told me I'd be auditing cash but I haven't even touched a bank reconciliation.

My book is just spec and side projects. I’m trying to get a new junior-to-mid role because I’ve gotten nothing good produced where I’m at, and I have zero faith this will change if I stick around. I’m asked for work samples from recruiters and CDs even though I make clear that what I’ve done doesn’t reflect who I am as a creative. Think CRM/DM/B2B stuff. They insist on it, and I never hear back afterwards. Not sure what to do. Almost feel like I’d be better off erasing my agency experience.
