I am helping build out a small but fast growing accounting consulting firm and we are starting to develop our policies from a benefits, HR, and employee management standpoint now that we have hired an employee base. I have seen a thousand different company benefit overviews but I’m looking for feedback on your preferences and experience in the following areas: PTO, Maternity/Paternity leave, Bereavement leave, client travel (I.e. billable vs not and reimbursements/per diem). Share your thoughts!

Bereavement should be extensive (I took 3 weeks) for immediate family members (e.g. parents/guardians, siblings, children). There should be zero pressure for someone to return to work during that time.

like

Do standard PTO hours, and unused PTO redeemable with cash at the fiscal year end.

like

Paternity leave 3 weeks fully paid, maternity leave 4 months fully paid and then start reducing over the year for a full year off.

PTO 25 days plus federal days, birthday and Christmas off

Bereavement leave should be in no question

Fully paid sick leave, not using PTO when sick

And then I woke up… although most of these are in european countries

like

D1 - managers and above get 6 weeks PTO at CR, typical federal holidays and a week off for both 4th of July and thanksgiving. Happy to refer in if you're looking for a change :)

Floating holidays: If you have to work on a holiday, the ability to move that floating holiday to another day of your choosing.

like

Offer an HMO plan if possible

I would say paternity leave is week, I would not go to a company that does not offer at least 5 weeks of paternity leave, can do 4 but three week is a joke.

Are there any executives out there who have recently negotiated with their CEO for an updated compensation package? I know I'm being underpaid as a CFO who has also handled all of the HR responsibilities for the past 3 years. Currently at $130K with $30K bonus at the end of the year. I don't take the insurance through the company either. Currently no 401K match program available.

How to avoid immediate staffing after completing the one project?
Somebody advice on this please.
I literally need 1-2 weeks bench/off time.

I want to brag on my kid, but I don’t want to embarrass him, so I’m doing it here. My college sophomore found out today that he ended up with a B in his accounting class - which is remarkable, given that he received a 50 on his first exam and a 70 on his second. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen him work this hard - and I couldn’t be more proud. The grades that come easily don’t impress me nearly as much as the ones that are hard fought.

So stuck. What do I do? I joined this firm a year ago (4 yrs exp total) to grow/get more court/client exposure. Then 2 more-experienced associates were hired, pandemic, & all cases are divided between the other 2. I have no defined tasks except deficiency letters or the odd pro bono case. Boss claims it's mentoring. I still need to meet bill req.

Last wk Boss said I'll do more & my work was good, but today said I can't 2nd chair bc I don't have experience. I'm doing less now than my prior firm.

I spend 2 hours a day being productive and the rest of the time watching Netflix/Hulu/etc or napping/eating.

Have been doing this for 3 months now and I continue to get positive feedback from everyone. I can do this for another year (duration of my project) and no one will say anything.

Had to get that off my chest. Life is so nice/on easy mode these days 😬

Side note - it speaks volume when multiple associates are trying to lateral at the same time

Offer 1 - staff revenue accountant so reading contracts, speaking with the sales team and legal team, a lot of work at the end of the months to close books and reconcile transactions to make sure we are ASC 606 compliant. This track usually leads to director of revenue. Offer 2 - internal audit staff so SOX and compliance projects.
