I’m a single mom with a 4 year old and if anything I’m better at my job now and advancing more.
It’s all in your hands really to determine how you handle and balance things.
Passing on a version of great advice I was given: you'll never have a crystal ball to see a version of your life where you made different choices. So - make your best choices, for YOU, based on what is right to you. And don't look back.
If you have kids, you'll never know if that choice helped or hindered your career. But that's ok.
And if you have a child, you might find the focus on your career shifts. I don't mean you care less, it's just different.
Wishing you the best of luck!
I was an AD when I got pregnant. I was due for a promotion and I had various conversations with various leadership on how I expect to be promoted when I return from my maternity leave. It worked out that there was another opening on another team that I was able to be promoted into when I returned to work, but if that didn't happen I was going to start looking seriously (I was passively looking already while on leave) as soon as I was off leave in the event that there was no movement on my promotion. So my advice to you is, start a family whenever you feel like, but don't stop fighting for yourself because of that. You'll only fall behind if you let it. I did also see a lot of directors and above level starting families and if anything that encouraged me that if they can do it so can I. Echoing someone else's comment on this thread is that moms are much better workers because we learned to be more efficient with our time in order to juggle work and baby. Good luck!
