I am in a bit of pickle. I have a female manager who is super supportive and has always tried to promote me . However she is not a very good listener and usually misses lot of important points.contd

Could you discuss with her and the other manager that it would be useful for the streams to be connected for x y z reasons. Make it completely not personal, but about the success of the project. If your arguments are strong, they will probably have to agree. Discuss together a cadence and suggest that you could be the connecting point so not everyone is on all calls. Report back to her on what is happening. At that point you would also have an opportunity to give her some suggestions ‘based on the working style observed’. This way you are helpful to her without giving her direct negative feedback.

Thank you d1 and kpmg1 for the advice . She has good influence in practice but not in account . She has fall out with others coz of several misunderstanding , due to the reason mentioned above . I genuinely care about her and want her to succeed. But I guess I should think about me first right ?

like

It doesnt have to be a choice. Do what you need to do to be successful in the project, but it doesnt have to be at the cost of her mentorship. She's an adult who is managing her own career, if you think sharing info is helpful to you and her go ahead but if its all downside, you aren't required to tell her what people like and dont like about her. She can and should figure it out or maybe the whole account team should go down with the titanic if everyone is that manipulative and self-serving

like

I think if you can unconditionally accept your manager for her fault of being a bad listener, you’ll see a lot of your frustrations go away and find more solutions to work with her without creating an adversarial relationship.

like

She also has had conflicts with manager on other thread of the project and team member on that thread don’t like her .coz proximity they also do not include me in some of the important discussion.should I tell my manager about her shortcomings and try to patch things for her or should I support her no matter what and not care about other team members

Tell co workers you are you not an extension. Before you tell her of her shortcomings check the power and influence she has. Rather than say shortcomings make it about you. Write out your highlights concisely. Tell her you want to make it easy to sell you. Not sure why others don't like her you didn't say. If she has no influence then consider be assigned to someone who does.

Thanks M1 and P1 for the advice. Discussion is off the table , as swords have been drawn on both sides now . So sticking with her is what I am going to do.

Ok if the work environment is toxic and the manager totally unsupportive ... And eventually you leave the job ... During interviews when the HR asks you why did you leave the job ? What should be the answer ? I have often seen / heard that you should never badmouth your boss or company no matter how bad the situation was at work ? Then what should be the answer to this question ?

I have been working in an interim role as a portfolio manager. I was promised that the role would be mine. Its a political minefield.

what do you talk about in your 1:1s?

I got lucky and now have leadership that seems to care about my career growth, but I'm 1. a little overwhelmed taking over a new role from someone who went on parental leave earlier than expected and 2. not used to thinking outside my day to day job, happy to keep my head down and just produce good work.

most of what I bring up in these meetings are logistical or prioritization concerns but I feel like my manager is expecting a lot more from me.

Hi! I’m doing some research on employee benefits (medical insurance, 401k, HSA/FSA, commuter benefits) and was hoping to connect with People specialists or HR professionals in the comp & benefits space. I’m trying to better understand any pain points or challenges you might face with utilization/enrollment. Anyone interested in connecting? Thank you!

I'm working on a Fintech startup related to commercial banking pricing. We would like to do some "expert interviews" with current RMs (we would compensate your time.) We want to better understand the friction points when it comes to price C&I or CRE loans. Please DM me if you are interested.

We are not looking for any private information, but more anecdotal evidence of issues that can be improved.
