DD1 you mean foolish with their shareholders' money? Look if you think the private sector is so great look at the hurricane of stupidity at any airport, sporting event, etc.--are these are your "smart" and "efficient" private sector workers? Workers are workers everywhere, public sector just has to publicly admit their failures where the private sector often is able to hide them.
They are smarter and more efficient yes, and they aren't doing it with money I'll never get back (PLEASE try to defend taxation as an "investment" in this forum). Also, what failures do public sector workers admit? See the statements above about there not being consequences. My last year in the National Guard they overspent their personnel budget by $100M with 2 months left in the year. Number of people that "publicly admitted failure" or were fired when the Guard couldn't meet its statutory federal requirements for two months? Zero.
Big bro got him
Bad incentives. Bad hiring. Short term thinking. Can't fire. So many reasons
You think private sector clients are all go-getters? I see a huge amount of waste in F500, public sector are just more forthcoming.
making a tangible impact in the world. Everything is so slow, everyone at the client sites seems unprofessional and intellectually dim, and their goals are nebulous yet unrealistic yet pointless. I honestly feel like half the organisations I work with are redundant. Why does VA's IT dept need its OWN HR division? Why do SESs build unnecessary organizational complexity and never accomplish anything? Why can't govt operate a little leaner?
Working on fed projects will make you see the validity of the libertarian party
I've worked on both federal and commercial projects. Large corporations are just as bad, if not worse.
Btw, if you guys think VA sucks as a client, imagine how bad they suck as a disabled veteran. Absolutely terrible.
Depends on which Federal you work in. Intelligence not like that, and other security oriented organizations.
It really is. I voted for Hillary and consider myself really liberal person, but when I meet with clients and hear them talk about what they want and their pain points, I want to stand on the table and scream THIS WHOLE INITIATIVE/DEPT/TEAM IS NOTHING BUT THE PET PROJECT OF SOME IRRELEVANT SES AND IT WONT CHANGE ANYTHING BECAUSE NONE OF YOU HAVE ANY INCENTIVE TO WORK HARD.
It's not only the comically bloated organizational structures, it's this culture of entitlement where employees know they can't get fired and no one is held accountable for any type of success. Hell they won't even define success in a way that they can be held to later. Their leadership is soft and insular- spending is encouraged, not discouraged. People only tick off boxes to move up a pay grade. No drive, no ambition, no desire of efficiency.
Sounds about right. My personal beef was the people who were unqualified for the role, yet were hired anyway (or moved into a role bc it was higher GS rating).
I really need to lose this attitude. Can anyone tell me a story or their experience that would mean my feelings about federal work are unfounded or at least it's as bad in the commercial space?
To As1's point, there is a reason why a ton of vets are libertarians. The military bureaucracy is just as ridiculous and incompetent as the rest of the federal government. At least the F500 is generally being stupid with their own money.
I hate it when I hear govt employees call all contractors Beltway bandits...yet they hardly ever work while at least us consultants are actually trying to make something happen.
Bain and D1- I'm glad to hear the grass isn't greener. That's why I posted this- I wanted to hear that my clients wouldn't be any smarter and the work wouldn't be any more transformative in commercial.
Not enough empowered Indians and too many smug baby boomers and graduates of crappy schools and online universities making decisions based on nothing other than getting into a bigger office with ugly furniture.
Act as if you can make a difference, treat each opportunity as if you are spending your own money...serve those who need serving...hold those you can to higher standard...believe you can make a difference...
Trump is gunna tank half these departments anyway
Yeah who knows D3. Luckily i can do commercial and federal work if I want. Considering that as an option.
