Data & Analytics Consultants

I am in strategy consulting now, and am looking to switch to Data & Analytics role in the industry. Have a background in chemistry (which isn’t massively statistics related) and have 4 YoE in strategy consulting. What are the level of coding skills required (is knowing Python / SQL already more or less okay or do I need more specific languages eg Scala), and is doing MS in DS recommended? Think I need to further develop my coding skills too :/

Why not switch to a D&A role in consulting first and see if you like it? All the Big 4 have huge practices for data science, analytics, & data engineering

In my local Big 4 data and analytics practice is nonexistent haha. Virtually 80% of project that we have is SI related - there isn’t much choice at my local firm

Python is standard and fine. But you need to be writing clean, good code to be useful on an actual project, especially if you're collaborating with other people. You're not necessarily going to get that from a graduate degree, so if that's something you can't do now, definitely work on it. And that's about habits as much as skills. Everything is in a function, a function does one thing, it's abstracted to a reasonable degree depending on the context, you're familiar with data types, you don't hard-code stuff, you use version control.

What do you want to be doing in five years, OP? There are many tracks in analytics, leveraging different technical and academic skills

I’m thinking of a career that is more around using analytics to drive strategy, which I think would be a good use of my current skills. Am also thinking to be in industry rather than consulting - what do u think?

Honestly with python and SQL you really can’t go wrong. That’s about as detailed in data my team goes, it’s more about the display to my team. So I ended up having to teach myself power bi, Power apps, and power automate to get the visuals and other tools working. It’s all about what the goals of the team are

My last agency hired back a ton of the people who were laid off (thankfully I landed a new gig, would not go back to that place). They decided to bring back 10/19 that were laid off. Unfortunately, they are notorious for doing this on multiple occasions. What are your thoughts on hiring back those you let go? And to clarify as a group we were let go not furloughed.
