Feels low to me. Any bonus or other incentives?
I got a $300 check once for an excellence award, but that’s never guaranteed. Aside from that, no other bonuses or incentives.
So I thought to look at NASA for system administrator positions or cybersecurity roles. Every comparable position made 20-40% more in a private sector listing with the same level of duties.
That sounds about right. Recently, I have been looking at jobs in the private sector and seems like jobs with similar roles and responsibilities make well over 100K.
What do you actually do?
Basically maintain release schedules for 500+ user application.
I agree that it seems a little on the low side. From NASA, I would expect at least 10K more.
Haha! My coworker has been at NASA for 15+ year and makes 78K a year. 10K increase would put me at in the same pay grade has him which is probably not going to happen.
I may have a better chance of getting 10K more if I were to go to the private sector.
It's definitely way below what you'd want to be getting in the commercial world. I wouldn't say that the government pays terribly (at least in the defense department where my sister works). But I do think that sometimes they can take advantage of tenure and it takes a lot to up your salary when you're already in there. How many different managers have you had and what's the process there for starting a discussion about a raise?
That sounds about right for the shenanigans. Saw that you know your colleague's salary so it's unlikely it's going up anytime soon. If this is the reality you've got, how much passion do you have for your work there and what do you think you'd really love to do somewhere that's different? If you want to stick with NASA a while longer (who wouldn't if the pay was good, I'm sure), then think about what you really want to do and why and try to just bite the bullet on the pay until you're ready to leave for a different reason. Basically, it sounds like staying would be the equivalent of doing a passion project, but for some salary.
