I am interested in going back to school for Copywriting. I am currently working at a small agency and interested in doing schooling on the side to further my career and hone in my skill sets.

Anyone recommend any degrees, programs, or schools that I could do online?

I really don't think school for copywriting is worth the money, but taking an individual course or two from a portfolio school could be a good idea if you're feeling like this

like

it's not worth it

I was a junior CW at a regional shop right out of college for a year. Wasn’t making anything fun or good. So I went to Miami ad school to build a portfolio. Got a late start but it worked out.

like

Yeah I feel like this was the way to go pre pandemic but man, I've seen a couple really nice portfolios from students who were at Miami ...and then they ended up in pharma. Definitely a path to consider, but it feels like everyone I know who got in somewhere in general advertising the last few years did so because they knew someone, not because of their book

Not worth it. You can learn everything you need to outside of school. Even if you're in school, you'll realize they don't teach you all you need to know anyway

As a job seeker, what would be the benefits of taking a 12 month contract with no "contract-to-hire" statement in the listing over a salary or contract-to-hire position? I'm currently questioning if I should look for other opportunities, but potentially giving up my 401k, health insurance, and other benefits is nerve-racking, especially as a head of a household of four. Would it be beneficial to start a LLC or something if I were to go this route? I've only held salary positions in tech.

If anyone is thinking about going on flex time, I would highly recommend it. It might not work for everyone, but my experience has been a positive one. I took a 20% pay cut along with 20% reduced hours. I am able to support my family with that income and my firm respects my limited hours, but I still need to plan to make sure I can complete tasks in my reduced hours too. Anyways, if you like what you do, but don’t like the long hours and can take a pay cut, I would do it.

I make a very healthy six-figure salary for the region I live in—well-above the median household income, etc.—but I constantly see neighbors with more than me. I live in the shitty house in the neighborhood, have a very manageable amount of student debt, drive a used (albeit luxury) car. I am really prioritizing saving for my emergency fund, fixing up my home (mostly doing the work by ourselves), and working on my 401(k). And yet I see young families in very expensive housing. How?!

An agency I freelance for wants to hire me full-time. They told me for a Sr Copywriter, 100-110k. I countered with 125-150.

I also said I'm interested in a higher-level title - I currently freelance as a Creative Director of Copy elsewhere (they don't have that title at this agency.)

They came back and said yes to the title and to 125, with a 6 month review that could raise it to 145.

Which is good for Sr Copy, but low for CD/ACD level. Don't want to screw myself over. What to say now?
