It totally can make a huge difference!! I feel like my main trick has been learning how to ask people questions. Most people like to talk about their own lives and their work, so learning how to ask good questions has helped me to build more connections in my field. It's definitely not easy to network but I've noticed a lot more opportunities coming my way as I've gotten bertter at it

I just make myself open to random conversations at events
At a conference I made a random friend and we spent the rest of the week going to talks together and now are good friends. All from randomly joking at my poster
A good tip is always making sure that you're paying attention to conversation and showing that you want to be there. In any networking event I always remember the people who were the most eager to talk and ask questions as the ones that I'd like to really form a connection with.
Make friends, stay in touch, let them know your goals and career aspirations. There’s a lot of turnover in my industry and people often move to competitors. Maintaining friendships and not burning bridges is a good idea. You never know when you may cross paths and they could even help you land a new role someday!

I wish I were better at networking… but so far none of my networking has landed me a better position - maybe one day it will make a difference.
I agree and that is one of the reasons I always tell people to network as much as you can. You really never know when you may need someones help down the line. I make sure to stay in touch with people and connect often to really keep that connection alive.
Its not about who you know, but who knows you! Focus on building your brand so if something comes up, someone in your metwork can be like oh you should reach out to so and so
