I am leaving the classroom. I don't want to manage so many humans at one time, anymore. I'm considering working remote to be able to travel more easily and figure out where I want to live and what I want. Is there anyone who has left the classroom or the education field? What jobs were you able to transition into?

I’m still teaching and it’s my eighth year, but I’m currently also in the financing business which allows me to have a plan B in case teaching goes south and my district dies layoffs etc…. I teach in an urban school district that is very demanding and the teachers are so stressed out half them leave at the end of the day sweating. In the evenings and during the weekends, I enjoy working from home and being able to set my own schedule to help families with their finances - pay starts $400 and up per client. The benefits are great as well and so is the pay. On the side since I really enjoy working with children, I work as an early intervention therapist for children 10 months-3 years old (teaching degree helped get into this field)…again you select your own hours - pay starts $70 per hour. … so I’m sharing this with you because maybe you just need to take a break from your current position. I know my district allows teachers to take a sabbatical where it allows you to study or teach in another position outside your school. Teaching the English language (remotely) overseas might be something you might enjoy. Just try and see what other careers you are able to use your teaching credentials. I wish you the best of luck and may the Lord richly bless you. I know this must be a very hard move but you can always return.

I taught Chemistry 5 years and left the classroom for 17 years. I returned in 2016. I teach math now. I was teacher of the year for’2021. In my 17 year hiatus, I was a Trainer for P&C Insurance publicly traded company & a stay at home Mom. I made a lot of money. Also, I tutored Stats and Alg. I went back to school and earned my Bachelors in math & a Masters Degree. You can do anything with the skills you have. Over the course of 17 years, I matured. Now, I am the Dept head, and over several clubs. I have developed boundaries. I know it was a difficult decision to make. For no one starts a career or invest in one to just walk away. Sometimes, walking away is the best and only option. I wish your days ahead are better than your past. This is why I tell new teachers/student teachers to think long and hard before entering this profession. It’s very difficult to transition out if it doesn’t work out for you. I’ve heard it many times: a teacher has so many skills that transfer to other professions….. and yet I never see concrete examples. Look for a career that requires a college degree with no specificity, something with organizational skills, leadership skills, public speaking, planning…….think of all that you do as a teacher. How can those skills be applied to other jobs? It’s gonna be tough. You may need to go back to school for retraining. All the best to you.

@Michigan, that would reduce my monthly pension. Pension is calculated based on the average of your last 4 years of salary.

Look for a state position. I know here in NC because you are a state employee your time would go with you. (Sick leave, annual leave, retirement and insurance)

I actually worked full time for a church as a coordinator of ministries. I found it enlightening and flexible. However, salaries are dependent on tithes so when the economy goes down so do tithes and jobs dependent on those tithes. I also worked with the youth ministry which was nice with my education background but I didn’t have to work with 150 teenagers/day. I would do that job again.

I've been job searching a bit myself recently and have been pleasantly surprised. I found a few remote positions for education organizations that work outside of the classroom with parents and other teachers. Even a few publishing and writing jobs that preferred experience with children over past experience in the industry. Best of luck on starting this new chapter of your life :)

How long did you teach, before returning, and how has it been for you with that break away and now back in? Part of me feels guilty for leaving and misses how I used to love teaching, but there has always this part of me wanting to explore other career avenues. I know it will never go away.

Last year my wife took a second job as a medical receptionist. When HR brought the resume’, the supervisor requested they set up an immediate interview in spite of no medical field experience in 20 years. “3 reasons,” said the supervisor. “First, if she’s taught that long, she shows up for work everyday. Second, she has experience dealing with the public, sometimes I am sure with angry and upset people. And third, she know how to follow rules. We can train the rest.” She got the interview and the job, mainly due to daily skills we use that don’t necessarily get a line on a resume’. Good luck. (And me? While I work part-time as an online teacher, my next “out-the-classroom” gig will likely be in school fundraising, student travel, or driving a bus for a charter company or local college.)

I took a break to work as a research assistant at a university for a short time and returned to teaching when I was ready. I also did museum work as a programs manager. Good luck. It’s nice to try a few different careers in your life. I went back to teaching and am in my 20th year.

The late nights at the office then the bar and random hookups and excitement and all that? Sure it’s a grind but I think I actually miss it too. Maybe I just miss seeing people at work or seeing people at all. I wonder if we’ll ever get back to that.
