I am less than a year (11months) in my current role and I am planning to switch - I have a good offer in my hand. But not sure how to initiate the conversation with my manager.
Some points:
- The opportunity is really good
- I am not liking my current role - far too many limitations and micro management
- Our team/function doesn't have a seat in the leadership table - most of our budget is not approved, our projects don't have enough sponsorship
Continued in comment.

Why to think to initiate conversation with manager or anyone.
Simply resign and move on. Thats it.
Sort of, so I report to someone who is a Global Leader (even if it's a small team). Apart from just being my manager she has been pretty proactive with on-the-go mentorship. I am sure the expectation would be to inform her over a call then to surprise with an system alert. 😅
- I have been demotivated for some time and not willing to more effort here
- I am grateful for the opportunity but feel it's best that I move to a different setup/organization
Could you advise the best approach to have this conversation with my manager?
Thanks in advance. Appreciate your effort and advise!
Well, the points you mentioned in your post can be copy pasted to your manager except for the micromanagement part because some managers take that personally 😉 To initiate the conversation just ask for his time to setup a meeting & let him know beforehand that you want to discuss about an opportunity you have in hand. Once you are in the call, just state your points respectfully. No manager can force you to stay. But if your offer had some sort of agreement then you might have to pay some compensation.
Thanks again for your advice. It makes sense, I am going to focus on the opportunity.

Setup a formal Outlook meeting with your manager(even if you sit in a conf room and discuss).
If she asks prior to meeting, just mention you want to discuss about your growth in the company, aspirations and some new developments.
During the meeting be forthright with the pointers mentioned, be formal and treat this call just as a courtesy meeting where you are due diligently updating the management about your decision, and are clear and have made your mind to move to a better opportunity which will help you grow and seek new challenges. Period.
Thanks for your advice. I did end up having a call with my manager - it went well but have to confirm everything.
