I’m a fan of using picture binders of popular items, favorite things, holidays, people and then having students tell me about them. Peers without conversation difficulties can carry out this practice with their peers with autism (peer mediated learning). Some I start out with greetings and typical comebacks when someone greets them. Once mastered, I move to common questions and answers. You can put these on a key ring and teach the student, their peers and staff how to use them. Make several sets for others. I call it baiting the environment. Start with one or two questions and answers on the key ring. You can add pics so the student can identify when/where to use it. Many times students with autism lack vocabulary to pull from. Abstract constructs are extremely difficult. Sometimes students who use augmentative devices or conversation apps improve verbally as well. Good luck. I’m glad you are pursuing this. Just remember they need a reason to talk. It helps to appeal to their interests. No one system works for everyone. Another issue, I have faced is prompt dependency for students with autism. Don’t forget to fade the prompts so that the natural stimuli of someone talking to them becomes the prompt.
Have you tried social stories? Maybe start with a script?
