I am looking to find out what your school does with this type of situation. I have an 18 year old student who should have graduated in 2020, but at this time only has a third of the required graduation credits for my public high school. This student has been an EBD student since 1st grade, has an IQ of 96 and has diagnoses of ADHD and Mood Disorder. This post continues on the first comment due to a character limit in this section.

This student has missed just shy of 50% of school days in 9-12th grade as well. My school counselor and I are being told by a special education admin that we need to allow this student to graduate on meeting IEP goals. This student is very intelligent, yet unmotivated and apathetic towards school. The accommodations are such that daily work is transition based and high interest electives. The daily expectations for each class are so minimal a 2nd grade student has higher expectations of them.

The counselor and I have never had this issue come up before as our accommodations allowed our students to be successful and gain their graduation credits. This student is the first we have had who has no chance at graduating despite every imaginable accommodation over the years, we even read for him and scribe for him when we can get him to work. Our biggest concern is this setting a precedent, in our very small school where everybody knows everybody, of being able to come to school for 5 years, absent for almost 50% of it, socializing all day and disrupting the learning of others, failing a majority of your classes and you still get a diploma. Please share your thoughts. Thank you.

He can graduate with a certificate of completion. It’s not a diploma. Since he has an IEP he can continue in school until he’s 22.
I’ve never heard of students graduating with a diploma based on their IEP goals.

But, you said he’s very intelligent. In that case, leverage his strengths and make it work.

I think in my district this student would have been placed in the Vocational track... Many students like this thrive in school when they are trained for a career. We give our students a test in MS to find out their interests before HS. I think this is why we have this Student Loan crisis now, everybody must attend college...Students are not provided with any other options!

It is a very small school, under 350 students in Pre-K through 12. We have no vocational track and this student is not interested in taking our technical education classes. We can’t even get him to do the work necessary to pass the classes related to his career interests.

I sent a similar student to a credit recovery program and he finally graduated!

Also, there are online credit recovery. At some point he has to want it for himself.

I know he’s being respectful with the “sir”, but the formality is just so new.

From a high school Resource Math teacher....

"I absolutely LOVE teaching!!! I won't lie, the Sped paperwork and politics are daunting and can feel defeating.

My goals in teaching are...

1) make a connection- students need to feel safe and heard!

2) make it fun- even if it at my expense. We learn and remember information better associated with visual and memories.

3) if you are not harvesting....it is ok. You can plant the seed and you can water it. Be patient for the "lightly moment". St
