I am looking to leave the fashion industry but i am unsure which industry my skills would be useful. I have experience as an account manager, content writing , social media and e-commerce. I am open to anything and moving anywhere but I am currently based in NYC.

Can anyone help? Words of encouragement is also welcome.

E-commerce and digital marketing sound like a fit. Maybe somewhere like Wayfair or Klaviyo.

Thank you, I’ll check them out

I was in retail for 20 years and moved to consulting.

Communication, general knowledge of the industry (people who have been consultants all their life are trying to advise retail companies on problems, so they need a reality check), ability to figure out a solution for any problem (as you know in retail sh** hits the fan every day), collaborating well with others, working hard and many hours (but in consulting I get paid, unlike in retail), presenting to c sweet executives.

I’m a design manager for fabric and textile products. Last year I hired a fashion designer onto my team and he has been fantastic and product development (tangible product, not digital). Your skills can apply anywhere in any industry! It’s all about how you word them on your resume. It sounds like you’re organized, specialize in written and other forms of communication, have experience with various softwares, and are generally tech savvy. You could literally work anywhere! Figure out how to showcase your skills and let your personality shine. As a manager, I’d rather hire someone with the right personality who will mesh with my team, even if they’re weaker in some skills. Skills can easily be developed, but personalities are nearly impossible to change.

The best managers help their team members develop their careers, trust them to do their jobs, and remove obstacles whenever possible. I try my best to do that for my team and they are loyal, so much fun to be around, and work hard. A few months ago one of them got a job offer for $30k higher than he’s earning here and he turned it down because he doesn’t want to leave me as a manager. I’m so honored that he thinks so highly of me, and I’m also grateful for his dedication to our team. We certainly work hard, but we have a lot of hilarious office shenanigans and the culture here is one of the best I’ve ever found. Look for managers who value culture and team fit—they do exist!

Don’t lose hope. I made a large leap in my 30’s. It took time, failure, resiliency, and faith in myself. You can and will make a change that works for you. Good luck!

I have worked as a fashion designer at large companies for over 15 years and am also eager to leave the industry. If anyone has left successfully and maintained their salaries in another field, I’d love to hear. I currently make about $220k including bonus. Thank you.

Thanks! I appreciate the tip.

Recruiters: if a candidate said something along the lines of “I’m obsessed with this opportunity” (not verbatim but it was that energy) how would you interpret that?
I don’t feel it came off desperate like I need to get this job, but rather in a “I’m really excited about this company and role” kind of way.

Edit: they’re also aware I’m in final round interview for another position, and meets all job requirements if that adds to anything

Hey all. I was a career pivot. It’s hard, one o free hardest things you’ll ever do. But you can do it.
It’s ok to get discouraged, and even give up for a bit; but just remember to pick yourself back up at some point.

For point of reference: I was a police officer for 11 years. Now I’m a mobile app developer. (Was a web dev for a bit too)

Anyone struggling with imposter syndrome? When I worked for a very well known Fortune500 tech company I couldn't help but feel major imposter syndrome. One- I am a woman in a male dominated industry, I didn't go to a prestigious school like most of my peers and I just didn't think I deserved to be there. Everyday was a struggle and tried to keep myself small so no one would find out I was a "fraud." Looking back on it now, wiser and more experienced, I realized how detrimental feeling that way
