I am new to consulting but have 20 years in industry, with last role being leadership at a major bank. Who in the actual hell do these snot nosed assistant Vice Presidents think they are to be ordering managing director level consultants around? Can I pull rank or anything or do I need to grin and bear it because the client is king? Maybe consulting isn’t for me - this is just absurd

I think being client is the rank. Not the AVP.

I wanna say this is your karma because you were obviously a hierarchical jerk at your last job. Welcome to consulting. I hope they eat you alive 😂😂

You’re a principal consultant now. Not an MD. Do what your client and partner say.

Did you think the client was paying to have you order them around?

You can pull rank internally. Externally, swallowing your pride is a big part of consulting. Those that have a difficult time with this usually don’t stay long.

OP - I was a VP/Leadership at a bank and other companies and have the same if not more yoe than you. If you were at that level than you should have worked with and observed the consultants that helped your bank. Throw away “The Prince” and start reading “The Book of the Courtier” - if you want to be successful your client must want to keep you around and build relationships with them. Those snotty AVPs are your firm’s future clients - make them want to pick up the phone and call you - not dismiss you & your firm.

LMAO. Please take your hierarchical management skills and leave.

I usually don't make fun of people for not lasting in this job, but I'll make an exception.

Pull rank? Only if you want to lose the client.

With the client, you have no rank to pull. Deal with it or move on.

I hate the snooty AVPs too... in the sense that they don’t know what is going on, have tunnel vision and is not aligned with what their leadership is expecting

Hey, who told you to take time off to reflect on FB? Back to making slide decks!

Partners or whomever can help me understand about billing and hours. To keep things simple, let’s say you only have one staff to work 1,700 billable hours a year on a $60k salary and you have only one job that and the rate charged to the client is $300/hour and an projected hours budget of 1,700 hours. So ideally you would have revenue of $510k. If the staff takes less time partners make less money and if they take more time partners make more money while the staff keeps the same salary?

Applying for a couple of things and randomly decided to google myself to see what recruiters might see. Had helped a friend out way way back with a school project and came across her blog post about it on her personal website in which she says the reason she asked me to help is because she trusted my opinion since I am a “harsh critic.” I think she meant keen critic or that this was supposed to be a positive but to me, this reads as an insult (continued in comments)

Interested to hear how people learn project management. I have done PRINCE2 exam and read PMP materials, but I find these are too textbook theory based. Real life projects seem to be very different and a lot more complicated. I often do not know what needs to be done unless someone tells me. I believe you can learn these things on the job, but I am keen to expedite this with some books or courses. Are there any resources that are particularly helpful?

A white friend is looking to buy an apartment. One apartment is in an older building in an established neighborhood. It doesn't have an in-unit washer/dryer. The other apartment is in a brand new building in a historically black neighborhood that has seen a lot of gentrification but it's still near a project with a gym, a nice roofdeck with a grill and in-unit washer dryer and costs $100k less. She's considering the first place despite it being more expensive and older. Racism is expensive.
