Totally depends. Some are amazing some are shit.
As a senior I like a bit more presence from managers up front to get an idea of their direction, thoughts, expectations, etc. and it also helps with client relations having some more senior people there. Then once things are rolling I can usually take care of things myself since we should have a good cadence and then I just keep you informed of all the craziness that I deal with on the daily but also escalate when I see risks or clients losing their shit.
Wildly variable I'd say. Depends on how recently they've been promoted
Just a warning OP - if they have been at EY a long time I hope you are not new to managing. I am sure you are not but after being at EY for a while, good seniors are pretty aligned to SMs and partners so don't try and pull the "I'm the manager fuck you guys" route because they could easily go over your head.
??? You can still be a dick if you are a woman. It isn't an anatomy thing.
Figure out how long they have been at EY and whether they are lifers or experienced hires. Longer they have been at EY more you can rely on them for knowledge of EY engagement tools and the way things work here. Also, seniors should be able to develop their own opinions and not requiring a lot of macro managing, you should be relying on them to build a deck based on one or two email or phone communications.
Just be nice to them, we are all nice to each other at EY
I don't fear being a dick. I'm a woman. Sounds like outsiders will need to navigate the alliances and loyalties. Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions!
I think they are two or three yrs into Senior level. Not newly promoted.
What level are you? Expect nothing.
@EY6 - Manager 5
Lol manager 5..... So they didn't want you as a SM, expect them pretty much to corral the peons so you don't have go deal with the unnecessary shit and be sure to review every word because even up to SM they can't use spell check. And No one understands grammar, even me. So review it to make sure it meets some arbitrary level you have
And what EY3 says, idgaf what my manager has to think if I am aligned to a smart SM +ED
Put your big boy pants on and manage them. You need to task them and talk with them. Its not hard but you need to manage your team. Don't be a dick. Manage them like you want to be managed
Stfu EY6.
Thank you. Very helpful. Any Seniors reading this who can weigh in on how they want to be managed?
OP did you come from industry or other consulting firm? Agree that it depends on whether these seniors have been with the firm long enough or not. >2 years, you're good with setting the vision and clear guidance and let them be, checking in once a day or so. <2 years, you may want to keep a close look to make sure they know their way around. Newly promoted manager here's
