Can buy on Gemini or coinbase. I use MetaMask for my wallet and have a ledger for my cold wallet
Curious why MetaMask over Coinbase Wallet?
Yeah- ledger or trezor is gonna be a safe bet.
But take your time adjusting to the learning curve of sending/ buying crypto. (Maybe send just a small amount to test everything went through correctly before sending the full amount) And practice resetting your hard wallet w/ your seed phrase with that small amount.
I would say reset the wallet even before the small test transaction, just to save a few bucks.
But yes, 100% make sure your seed phrase was written correctly and you can enter it
Coinbase has cold storage. It’s also the least likely business to fail for online options. I think of it as is my data safer on a hard drive in my personal safe or in the cloud. For me Cloud is safer. I’ve already been locked out of my 2FA with Coinbase and gotten back in.

You should not buy crypto.
I'm not saying no one should. I'm saying that you should not. Investing is important to your personal stability and so so so many people get it wrong.
Start with a basic target date retirement fund. From there, learn about different asset classes, different philosophies, analytical methods. When you do eventually dip into highly volatile or alternative assets, you want to know what you're doing and how to protect yourself.
I treat my crypto money like casino money. My 401k Roth, HSA are funded at 15% of net income. House is paid off. All debts paid. When crypto sentiment is way down I throw currently $150 a week at crypto. I plan on mostly taking losses for the next 1-2 years in return for a 1000% return eventually. I’ve done it 3 times now. I roll it into real-estate. 3 paid for apartments that I rent out doing that strategy. If you treat it like stock you’ll probably lose. No other investment have I woken up to $20,000-$40,000 in returns over night. It’s rare but it happens to me.
Use a wallet like Coinbase Wallet or
MetaMask. Wallets are self-custodial (hot storage) and on chain. Ledger is cold storage but much more complicated and requires the $80 up front cost. Feel like most people who suggest Ledger don't understand that self custodial wallets can be recovered even if the companies go down
SA1 my point is cold wallets are not necessary for most people, especially beginners. On chain wallets provides essentially the same protection for your portfolio with added features and ease to play around with DeFi

Put it in a ledger. That has the highest security.
Hacks are not high probability events for normal people, but they can happen and, if they do, the crypto in the ledger is safe.
Buy on Coinbase and chill
Agree that now is not the time, markets have yet to find the bottom.
But getting started with one is a good goal. Suggest you buy from Coinbase, Kraken Gemini and the immediately transfer to cold storage - wouldn’t leave on exchange if the goal is to HODL
Not sure why everyone is so against you jumping in right now. Nobody can “find the bottom” especially in the Cryptoverse , but history says that now is actually a good time. I’d DCA into it (maybe $300 weekly or so). Just my 2 satoshis
You should wait for the market to dip little bit down, and invest the dead amount cause this is the market where you find every single day surprising or shocking. First try to opt the knowledge before you invest and as most of them suggested for understanding the market and to get knowledge invest small amount to start
Vast.bank it's the only OCC chartered bank that can custody crypto.
