Any PMs here working in FANG?
I would not say it's mainly business but if your company thinks about it that way then you can position yourself more in that direction in what you present. It sounds like they're focused on making sure their product does well in the market, which is definitely your job, but that involves getting into some of the engineering nitty gritty (apart from coding) and making sure that the UX is right, etc. But make sure that for this company you have a really strong go-to-market strategy, really lean into the roll-out, post-release phases, and other things that will make stakeholders salivate on the business/$$ end. Basically, build a good product that people will BUY and make that buying possible.
It definitely means different things at different places, but it also is a standardized role. It's a part of your job to manage the devs, not always as direct reports at every company, but sometimes. At the least you are responsible for their work and that what they're making is a good product at the end of the day, and then you're responsible for that product being a star in the market. You're basically along for the business ride but mainly because you've made a business-worthy product (everything shy of marketing). I would probably consult a PM book, and then plan out what you know that role must be and what's simply required for this company. But do consider that some companies hire people with something in mind, give it a specific title, but ultimately want you to do what they had in mind. Make sure that you know what they want you to DELIVER, figure out what is required for that, and then let them know what's required if they aren't on the same page about that. Helpful?
The role wades through business & tech depending on what you are doing in the product lifecycle.
Product managers own the product they are building & have ownership in design, build, and rollout. Different organizations have variations on the PM role, depending on the org history, politics, nature of doing business, etc.
Think about what you want to do as part of the role/long term strategy for your career & make the PM role part of that plan.
