I am not not having the best time. I do not feel interested on my job and find hard to wake up in the morning and do it...or do anything else. It has been a rough year with the pandemic and all. Sometimes I think home office is affecting me too much or May be I am lazy. Or is this depression? Should I see a professional?

I feel the same way. I know I’m a hardworking and ambitious person, but recently, I’m just feeling lazy and uninterested in work and other things. I have been trying to get to the bigger cause of this, and I think it can be easy to confuse laziness and lack of interest with symptoms of depression. I don’t feel like myself lately and I do think it affects my work. This pandemic is tough for everyone, but just know you’re not alone in feeing that way! Clearly I need to work my sh*t out too so I’ll be reading the suggestions here as well 😊

You’re not alone! I feel the exact same way.

I was experiencing the same thing for months. I finally found a therapist that I “click” with, and it’s been a huge help!

I’m in the same boat!! I have hardly been able to get any work done for a few weeks. I thought it was election anxiety but now that it’s “over” I’m still feeling this way. This might be a weird suggestion, but sometimes I find taking my laptop to the bedroom, and sitting on the floor, in the dark helps me kind of shut out all stimuli and I feel much calmer and can get a few things done. Kinda like going to hide from the world in a cave for a minute and just focus on what’s in front of you.

This is genius. I just tried it and love it.

I have been there, it’s normal and okay to have those feelings given the combined circumstances! I agree with finding a therapist, some additional steps you can take are to find one thing in the morning or afternoon that you enjoy, and make sure you do it. This can be reading a chapter of a book, journaling, getting exercise, cooking a nice meal. At first you’re going to have to force yourself to do it, but as time goes on it becomes something you look forward to. In the morning I try to start my day by recording one thought that makes me feel grateful or gives me hope, Ex: I am healthy, I am loved, I have the ability to improve my situation, and this will pass.

This is an amazing advice! Thanks!

It’s also important to remember that experiencing lows in live help us to find and appreciate balance when we are on a high. The one thought that gets me through the worst spells is that these feelings, for the most part, are a phase, not the extent of my forever reality. “If you’re going through hell, keep going”

This reads like my diary entry for the past few weeks. I was super busy for a few months. I felt like I was a billing machine and existed solely to work. It helped that I had so much stuff on my plate that I couldn't take a step back and realize how underappreciated and soulless I felt. But deals closed or stalled right before the election and so I've had maybe 75-80% of my previous workload but my billables have dropped to 20% or less 😂 I think there's a lot of great advice here. Advice I know I should follow but honestly can't muster up the drive to follow. But one thing that did help me: I realized I wasn't saving lives or helping poor communities. I'm a corporate atty so my job is to help push paper around so large companies can finance their business and investment banks can park their money according to their tastes. If I don't do something, a dozen others can easily do what I do in half the time. It sounds kind of depressing since our jobs seem so pointless put this way, but realizing this really helped me ease the pressure I put on myself! I sleep better, late-night emails don't annoy/stress me as much, and have gotten better at saying I'll do things "tomorrow" or "Monday". TL;DR - it sounds cliché, but changing my perspective helped a lot!

A chance of perspective May help. I sometimes get too pressured about work stuff that is not really that important.

I would look at your routines too. Getting dressed and ready and taking a morning walk can give you a huge boost before you dive into your day. Perhaps change up your work at home space. How are your social connections, do you have a mentor at work, do you have anything to look forward too. These little changes in routine can boost mood. Seeing a therapist is always a good idea too!

See a therapist - also see your regular doctor as this could have a physiological cause....

****none of this is to say you shouldn’t explore therapy antidepressants and the like! I’m just offering some low cost compliments to your regimen!****

I feel the same way. I’m on antidepressants and they help overall, but I still get depressed sometimes - especially when life throws me curve balls. Therapy can also help, but a lot of the times I just ride the depression wave out (which I’m currently doing). I’m sorry you’re feeling this way, but you’re not alone and it does get better. Definitely try the therapy/antidepressant route. It just might be the lift you need! *big hugs*

Same here. Just trying to ride it out. Hopefully there’s a light at the end soon.

Same boat here. I’m at almost 8 months in to WFH and find it so hard to care about my job anymore. I’m concentrating on taking care of myself by exercising, eating well, and not drinking too much...

I’ve been feeling the same way and wondering the same thing. I’m really struggling. For a while, I contemplated quitting, but I’m anxious about being able to find something else once I’ve “recovered”. For now, I’m planning to ask my firm for permission to work remotely from where my family lives for the next 6 months or so. (I’ve been living alone) I’m hoping being with people I care about will make me feel like I have purpose again. Not sure what I’ll do if the firm says no - go back to thinking about quitting, I guess.

Fingers crossed for you both, A7 and A3!!

Just here to say that like many others, I feel the same way. It’s rough right now. I keep thinking of ways to switch things up (looking to move, sending my resume to recruiters I used to never answer) but I know that’s not really going to help.

like

I'm going through the same currently. I finally accepted the fact that I need to ask for help and have my first therapy appointment tomorrow. Don't be afraid to speak up and admit that it's okay to accept help.

like

I too feel this way! You’re not alone. And it doesn’t help all my clothes fit right so when I do actually try to dress for the day I hit another wave of grief

like

You’re not alone and you’re not lazy. I’ve been struggling with the same things — finding it difficult to keep going when I don’t get any of the good things about my job (mostly the people I like at work) and only hey the crappy, stressful things (lots of deadlines, bad management skills from partners). I would say a therapist could be helpful. Or maybe just a day or two of playing hooky and doing something you enjoy. Call in sick and they’ll figure it out. We all have to take care of ourselves right now.

I’m here to let you know that you are not alone.
