Tech people like us get paid a little extra than non tech people.
Because when we write code, even after we resign and leave the company. That code still makes money to the company. So we are assets to most software companies. And also tech people need to constantly learn new things every 6months , it's stressful and challenging.
And it's not easy to hire new people to company because their salary expectations are high. And it's easier to retain employees with less money.
Non techs are mostly not billable.
Because it's hard to replace tech people and hiring costs more than retaining. I'm not saying tech guys are immune to firing but in mass layoffs, they would be lower on the list for any tech company.

@BA1 can you elaborate
Obviously !! Business can’t run without engineers/techies at any cost, whereas if HR’s aren’t there for a while, business doesn’t lose much consider hiring is on freeze. Same applies for OP’s etc
