I am on track to FI/RE in 9 years at age 42. But I am burnt out. Considering stepping away for 6 months to a year to do something cool, but don't want to fuck up fi/re. Help me see the forest through the trees? I've been a delayed gratification kind of person my whole life. Sick of waiting.

I don’t see the point of FIRE if you are not otherwise enjoying life. FIRE at 42 is great, but maybe even better to FIRE at 43 or 45 if these 6 to 12 months are going to be life changing. I wouldn’t wait to die at an old age and consider my only achievement in life is FIRE.

Agreed! Fire isn’t about sacrificing your young years happiness to retire early. It’s important to enjoy all your years!

9 years is a long time especially if you hate your job. None of our futures are guaranteed. Take the 6-12 months and enjoy life while you can.

The RE part of FI is overrated. The sacrifices some make to RE often feel way too high, IMO

I’ve wondered about this on this bowl. I feel like most people actually just want to be wealthy lol - not retire at 40 and live on $1K/month in Thailand or on a farm in rural Oregon or something, which are the types of scenarios I think of when I think of true FIRE.

It makes me sad to see people chained to a desk for their 20s and 30s and obsessed with spreadsheets. You don’t get those years back. And it’s a quick flip- at 40 you realize, wow I’m middle aged. Not that you can’t still have fun, but the bloom is indeed off the rose. Enjoy your youth, work when you’re old.

See if your company offers a sabbatical or short term leave. The job will always be here, take care of yourself first.

What is your FIRE number if you don’t mind me asking? Are you single or have a SO? Kids? I’m impressed with being able to FIRE at 42

I'm a lone wolf for life.

There’s no question here. You have the answer. Take your sabbatical, see the forest yourself.

Do people tend to age out of wanting to FIRE?

In your 20s-30s, you don’t know much, you’re told what to do, you have few financial resources so you are tied to your job. Under these circumstances it makes perfect sense why you would want to FIRE asap.

But eventually you advance up the ladder, you are now the boss and your people do all the grunt work. You also have built up expertise which makes the job easier. And you are making the best money of your life. FIRE is no longer so pressing.

Any market considerations before refinancing my student loan with current rates? They’re giving me a .75-1% drop.

It’s worth it to refinance at this rate to save paying $1000 of interest albeit credit gets hurt. My only concern is missing out on inevitable lower rates forthcoming.

I’ve been reading more and more in other financial forums about people refinancing into interest-only mortgages as a means of maximizing cash available for investment. Help me understand the argument for doing this? I’m starting to see it could make a lot of sense for people who 1) have a ton of equity and aren’t worried about the housing market flinching, 2) probably won’t keep their house forever, and 3) already have a high net worth. Thoughts?

Serious question - is there a reverse FIRE strategy? I like the idea of saving and retiring early, but the one hiccup I see (and sorry if this is grim) is if you die earlier than expected. I’d be worried that I would minimize lifestyle and fun for retirement at 50 but I’d die at 49. How about a way to work 9 months out of the year and retire/travel/relax for 3 months? This way you guaranteed your dreams/etc. are fulfilled
