I am overworked to the point of exhaustion. Late nights and every weekend for the past month. Tried to set boundaries and had two anxious managers basically say too bad. What do I do?!

I asked my CDs for some help due to medical issues that had come up because of stress and overwork. They were very receptive. “Of course, anything you need.” The next day, that same boss whom I had asked for help was now telling me he was disappointed in my effort and expected more from me. This was in front of my team in the meeting a day after he said he would help manage my workload so I can get healthy.

There’s a lot more to it than that. But long story short, i chose to leave. Went to a less sexy shop. I’m not doing as much cool work as I was before. But I have my life back. I work 9-5:30 or so. I go to the gym. I cook at home. I’ve lost 30 pounds. I have time to volunteer. I have weekends. Entire weekends! I can make plans with friends and actually keep them. My hair has stopped falling out. I’m off my anxiety medication. Almost completely off Ambien. Oh! I’m getting paid 30% more. Sure there are a little annoyances here & there but It’s been lifesaving for me. Literally. Life is too short my friend. I let go of my ego (wanting to win awards all the time) & a whole new life opened up to me. Good luck to you.

Time to look for another agency that values work life balance. Working yourself to the point of exhaustion is not worth it. Trust me. Been there, done that. Put yourself first.

Resign, or call in “sick” for a week whenever necessary to recuperate. And good luck to you. If you got into D5, I’m sure plenty of other agencies would love to have you.

It’s okay to quit situations like this to job hunt. It’s 2018, quitting without another gig is fine if you don’t do it regularly and have several months worth of living expenses in savings. You’ll end up in a better place refreshed instead of job hopping to another wrong fit because you were too frazzled to find the right place.

Cheer up. We will lay you off/make you forcefully resign soon enough.

Go above your direct managers and talk to someone with more power.

Just do 9-5 while you hunt. It’ll take a while for them to get any kind of corrective action organized and when they do loop in hr you can say you just needed a break/see your old time sheets/ reference talks with managers. This will buy you a month or 2 or more to get a job. Just be matter of fact about it, “leaving at 5:30 tonight, will pick back up in the am, have a good night.” Phone off.

These “anxious managers” are going to burn you out and lose an employee. “Good managers” don’t do that. Provided you’ve been clear enough, take that time you need and if they can’t deal with it... well, you probably don’t want to work in a place like that. Right?
