I am planning on leaving my firm for another. The new firm asked if I could start in a week. My old firm will not be replacing me. Do I still need to give my old firm 2 weeks?

Even if you could start in a week, I would take two weeks and use the second week to refresh and relax before the next job.

No still give 2 week courtesy. It’ll anger those in old form who are still part of your network.

OK if you’re not busy and can wrap up everything or hand it over in one week.

Also I think it’s bad form on the new firm to as you to start so soon. I had a firm rush me to start and frankly there was no rush; the partner was simply the kind who wanted everything done yesterday. Never mind that they made me wait 6 months after the screener call before asking to interview me ASAP.

Agreed on still offering 2 weeks. The new firm should understand, they would want the same courtesy from an outgoing associate.

Ask them. Often they would like you out the door immediately.

Super curious to understand commission structures for those in tech solution sales. What’s your base comp? What % of GM hits your bottom line? I’m currently at 95k base, realizing 8% at an estimated 40% GM. Unsure if this is a competitive structure.

I can’t help but feel stuck in my career. I’m a licensed attorney in another country, but been working as a law clerk in a firm for about a year now. I was hoping to take the NY bar in February but the foreign law graduate restrictions won’t allow. Now, I have to wait till July! I can’t help but feel this way, and as much as I love my company, I’m beginning to dislike the role. Maybe it’s an ‘ego’ thing? Anyone ever been in this position? How did you get over it?

I am not afraid to be tight on money. I can work as much OT as I would like as well.

When do you reach out to OC when you’re retained In litigation? I’ve always had counsel reach out say Hi I’m representing X. We have a brief discussion. Then move forward.

I have Parities who hasn’t reached out and answer is due in a few days. Labor Day is coming up so I’m going offline. I think they might default.

What do you do when a partner emails and takes you off an assignment, citing your lack of communication about the assignment, in an email thread that doesn’t include your most recent email update about the assignment? Especially when it’s not yet due? I think the email chain suggests the partner missed my most recent email; if so, whatever—it happens. However, was I out of line by defending myself with my omitted email attached to the assignment so it could be handed off?

How do you all handle non-billable work on top of meeting your billable targets (assuming no minimum requirement and bonus threshold not an issue)? I.e. If you have two hours of non-billable work to do (but it’s work that can be added to your time sheet like business development) do you still bill ~8 hours of billable work on top of that for a total of 10hrs on your sheet?

I am considering switching practice areas. I currently practice in personal injury litigation on the defense side. I have been in the PI practice in some way, shape or form for the last 9 years. However, I think it’s time for a change for me. I have always found trust and estate work to be interesting and would like to transition into that area of practice, on both the litigation and planning end of it. I am looking for guidance as to how to switch over. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

1) Hourly rates, 2) billable requirements, 3) typical bonus (origination bonus and/or discretionary) for 3-4 year associates in small and mid sized firms in California. Go!

V. annoyed by Milbank's and Cravath's bonus numbers. Our bill rates went up this year- bonuses should as well. We're potentially getting lower total comp, esp without 2018's summer bonuses. Not happy.

How do attorneys typical start a book of business in toxic tort?

Which books would you recommend to a product counel for tech startup about strategy, management, and leadership?

I went into insurance defense knowing about the mentality on hours. About a year in and I have had some great deposition/trial experience. I received a reminder about the annual hours requirement last week, but the thing is... I billed over 1000 hours for the first 6 months of the year and on pace for over 2k on the year. Realizing now how insane it is to have 2200 or more as a FLOOR on hours.

Got a LinkedIn message from a former coworker from my last law firm. He’s up for partner this year and asking for business. What he doesn’t remember is that last time I saw him, he was busy bussing my junior associate, who is now with me inhouse at the same company (same practice, different group). Should I give my junior the matter?

Has anyone gone through “the loop” interviews with Microsoft? I have a few scheduled for next week and am really looking forward to them, but am a little nervous as to what to expect too. I’m doing as much research as I can online. I’ve done 3 screens with them already, and have 4 interviews scheduled for next week. Any advice or suggestions? Thanks in advance. ☺️

Tell me about Hanson Bridgett.

So, I had received a job offer and was waiting for conflicts to clear in my new position before submitting my notice at my current firm. Ended up deciding to quit for personal reasons before then. Mostly, I felt burnout and some family issues. One of the partners at my new firms is close to a partner at the firm Im leaving. How concerned should I be that the partner at the new firm will discuss my taking the position before I leave my current firm?

I really need some career path advice! Trying to figure out whether it’d be better in the long run to (a) accept an offer from a bigger firm in a better market than my current firm that’s for a position in a practice area I have 3 years of experience in but know I don’t like/want to keep working in, or (b) stay at the smaller, less prominent firm I’m currently at (and still in the same practice area I know I don’t like) for now but keep applying for positions directly in another practice area.

Has anyone here left a job just to free up the time to search for openings elsewhere? My current firm is drowning me in garbage work that feels like a massive waste of my time, and I barely have time to breathe. I’m also trying to change practice areas so recruiters haven’t been a huge help since they seem focused mostly on openings in the same practice area I’m with now. I’m beyond overwhelmed and desperate to get out of this firm.. Thoughts/advice?

Just found out my firm bases bonuses on billed out hours rather than actual billed hours. Any work a partner cuts before the bill is sent to the client or any non billable work does not count for the bonus. I am not happy. Is this enough to move firms over? This isn’t standard practice as far as I know?

Fathers, how did you balance work and the newborn(s) in the time after your spouse gave birth? I have twins on the way and there’s a chance they’ll be in the NICU and my wife will need to recover as well but I only get like 3 weeks of leave. Advice is appreciated.

Giving my notice next week. I’m likely going to be taking a few clients with me (their choice). How do I transition the case to my new firm? Do I need to file something? And after I’m at my new firm do I reach out to the old one to get the file?
